Educated at Shrews- bury School, and at Trinity College, Oxford, (B.A. 2nd Class Classics 1844, M.A. 1847, D.D. 1874). Was Ireland University Scholar J842, and subse- quently Michel Fellow of Queen's College, and a Fellow and Tutor of University College. Was for many years Examining Chaplain to the Archbishop of York, Vicar of Bishopthorpe 1865 74, Arch- deacon of York 186774, Chancellor of York Cathedral 187174, Canon Residentiary of York 187374, and Prebendary of St. David's 185965. Consecrated H8th Bishop of St. David's 1874. Is ex-officio Visitor of St. David's College, Lampeter, and Patron of 132 Livings, and alternately of three others, the Deanery, the Residentiary Canonries, the four Archdeacon- ries of Carmarthen, Cardigan, Brecon and St. David's, the Prebend- Chancellorship, Treasurership, and Prebends (except the 1st Cursal) in his Cathedral. Married (1856) Frances Charlotte, youngest daughter of the late Rev. Samuel Holworthy, Rector of Croxall, Derbyshire. This See was founded by Dewi, or David, in the Vlth century at Mynyw. or Menevia, which aferwai'ds took the name of the founder. A claim to the dignity of an Archbishop- ric, derived as it was alleged from the ancient metropolitan jurisdiction of Caerlon-Upon- Usk, was put forth at various times down to the XHIth century. Consecrated 92nd Bishop of Salisbury, 1869; is Provincial Precentor of Canterbury; Patron of 53 Livings, the Precentorship, Chancellorship, Treasure! ship, Sub- Deanery, Sub-Chantership, and all tht Prebends in his Cathedral, and the three Archdeaconries of ISarum, Dorset, and Wilts : married (I8o4) Mary Anne, eldest daughter of Thomas Crokat, Esq. of Leghorn, and has issue, living, Sons, Rev.
