Born August 30th, 1826; suc- ceeded his father in 1861; educated at Eton, and at. Trinity College, Cambridge ; entered the 5th Dragoon Guards as Cornet, (April) 1846, exchanged to the Scots Fu- silier Guards as Ensign and Lieut. (June) 1846, became Lieut, and Capt. 1849, Captain and Lieut. -Col. 1855, Brevet Major in the Army 1854, Brevet Col. 1867, Major 1868, and Col. 1875; served in the Crimea, and was present at Alma, Inkermann, and Balaclava, and at the siege of Sebastopol ; appointed an Extra Aide-de-Camp to Major-Gen. Sir James Yorke Scarlett 1854, and rejoined his regiment 1855: has the Crimean medal and four clasps, the order of the Medjidie and the Turkish war medal. Is a Dep. Lieut, of Inverness -shire, and a Magistrate for Surrey: married (1863) Helen, daughter of Commodore George Allan Magruder, late of the U.S. Navy, and has issue, living, Son, James Yorke Macgregor Scarlett, 6. 1871. July 19, 1824, Sarah, daughter of the Hon. George Smith, late Chief Justice of the Mauritius ; and d. June 24, 1861, having had issue two sons and two daughters.
