Ex. 3. Divide 2+3 —1 by 2+ —1.

279. The method of Art. 262 may be used in finding the square root of a+b —1.

Ex. Find the square root of —7 — 24 —1.

—7 — 24 —1= — 7-2 -144

We have now to find two quantities whose sum is — 7 and whose product is — 144; these are 9 and — 16;

hence —7 — 24 —1=9+(— 16)—2 \times 9 (— 16) =(9 — -16)2; —7 — 24 —1 = 3 -4 -1
