MANCHESTER.* 1 HIS diocese was to have been erected by order in council dated 12th Dec. 1838; but that order never took effect, and was repealed by act of parliament 10 & 1 1 Vict. c. 108. On loth Aug. 1847 another order in council was made, in pursuance of an act for esta- blishing the bishopric of Manchester, and amending certain acts relating to the Ecclesiastical Commis- sioners of England. The collegiate church of Manchester was consequently constituted a Cathedral Church, and the dean and canons thereafter named the Dean and Chapter. The diocese was made to consist of the deaneries of Amounderness, Blackburn, Manchester and Leylond, and the whole parish of Leigh, including the town- ships of Astley, Atherton, Bedford, Pennington, Tyl- desley with Shakerley and Westleigh, otherwise Leigh in the deanery of Warrington, all in the county of Lan- caster and diocese of Chester, together with such parts of the respective deaneries of Kendal and Kirkby-Lons- dale in the same diocese as are in the same county. The election of the bishop was given to the dean and chapter of Manchester, in pursuance of a warrant from the Crown; and the bishop, having been confirmed and consecrated according to law, shall become in- vested with all the same and the like rights, privileges, dignities, power, jurisdiction, and authority as have
