468 OXFORD. 1472 Thomas Chauxdeler, S.T.P., succeeded in the be- ginning of June. He resigned in 1479. J479 Lionel Widevill or Woodvill succeeded. He re- signed in 1483. 1483 William Dudley, hishop of Durham , succeeded^ and died in the same year. John Russel, bishop of Lincoln, succeeded in the latter end of 1483. He was the first that was reckoned perpetual (or for life) chancellor of this university, and died possessed of it 30th Jan. 1494. 1494 John Morton, archbishop of Canterbury^ was elected the beginning of Feb., and died in Sept. 1500. 1500 William Smith, bishop of Lincoln, elected in the be- ginning of Nov. following. He resigned in Aug. 1502. 1502 Richard Mayew, president of Magdalen college, and lord almoner, elected the latter end of Nov. following. He resigned this dignity in May 1506. 1506 William Wareham, archbishop of Canterbury, elected 28th May. He died in Aug. 1532. 1532 John Longland, bishop of Lincoln, was elected the 1st day of Michaelmas term. He died 7th May 1547. 1 547 Richard Cox, S.T.P., dean of Christ Churchy was elected chancellor 21st May. He resigned 14th Nov. 1552. 1552 Sir John Mason, knt., dean of Winchester, was elected 1 8th Nov. He resigned 26th Oct. 1556. I 556 Reginald Pole, cardinal, was elected 26th Oct. He died 18th Nov. 1558. J 558-9 Henry Fitzaxan, earl of Arundel, was elected 24th Jan. He resigned 12th June 1559. 1559 Sir John Mason, knight, privy-QOunsellor, was re- elected 20th June. He resigned 26th Dec. 1564. 1564 RonEirr Dudley, earl of Leicester, was elected 31st Dec. Ob. 4th Sept. 1588 at Cornbury. 1585 Sir Thomas Bromley, deputy-chancellor, 5th Dec, during the earl of Leicester's absence in Holland. 1588 Sir Christopher Hatton, knight of the Garter, lord chancellor of England, was elected chancellor of this university 20th Sept. Ho died 20th Nov. 1591.
