PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.
The notes accompanying the following selection of French Nursery Rhymes are only intended to explain such words and phrases as are not likely to be clearly understood by children. Philological and other notes, fully entering into the origin and purpose of each particular rhyme, and offering a key to all obsolete words or provincialisms would have been out of place in a book of such an unpretending character as the present. Students or lovers of this branch of juvenile poetry are referred to the labours of Messrs. Gaidoz, Kuhff, and others, to whom the editor is indebted for a considerable number of the rhymes contained in this little volume.
