That the answering of tonic by dominant, and dominant by tonic, applies only to the beginning of the subject is clearly shown by the examples of real answers quoted in § 59 and § 83 (b), both of which contain the leap from tonic to dominant in the second bar, not answered by the leap from dominant to tonic.
