" 4 ■ V!;- «-&'», I— SECTION AT B. side and one end.* The supplementary facts given in this paper were enough to prove that there were twenty columns on the flanks (outer row) and eight at each of the ends, and that a bot- tom step surrounded the outer row of columns at a distance of about 40 feet from their centres, at least on the sides and one end, and presumably the other. Some valu- able detailed sections were also given, but in these what was found and what was conjectural interpreta- tion were not suffi- ciently distinguished. (Fig. 2.) Working over the evidence has con- vinced me that the network of walls spoken of supported a raised platform reached by continuous flights of steps, sur- rounding the colon- nade. Wood says that he ascertained that the inner row of columns had no square plinths. SECTION AT F. - In his MS. letters at the British Museum, Wood, in 1873, says :
" We have come across a short length of step at the east end, of the same width as the side step ... it is 116 feet from the centre of the column i7i situ on the north side."
