Miss Carola Oman, whose work as a serious historian is too well known to need introduction here, has studied every one of the thirty-eight ballads, starting with the first story of all of which the only copy in the world is in the Cambridge University Library. It was published about 1495, and in her particularly interesting preface Miss Oman describes it, and the second copy of it that was published fifty years later. She has set her tale of Robin Hood in the days of Edward II. The book is a first-rate piece of work, and a valuable contribution to the literature on this ever-popular charac- ter, as well as a thrilling historical story.
