w Elk Hill House, Ootacamand, 22’’, May 1905. My dear Mr (?), I am glad to receive your letter of 12th instant. I returned here on the 11th instant. Some years back His Highness the Maharaja Saheb of Jeypore2’ wrote to me to furnish any material I may possess for the history of Jeypore. I have since been trying to trace its history. The result of my studies is this and if His Highness approves I shall publish an article in the papers. The story found in the pamphlet written by the Rajah of Sangamavalasa that the (Mulapurushudu) arrived from Kashmire is not true, because at that time Mohamodans were ruling Kashmire. Sankara Varma never ruled Kashmire. The story found in the Jeypore papers printed by Govt. that the Rajahs held high position under the Gajapathis of Cattack seems more probable. There are only two families that trace their origin to Sankara in this world. One is Kadamba family and the other the Pallava family. The Kadambas were born from the sweat on the brow of Siva- but their Gotra is (Manavula). The other family is Pallavas. I have enough reasons to think that the Jeypore family is the Pallava family. The Pallavas became the most powerful Kings in Southern India in ancient times. They claim to be descended from Sankara and one of the Bharadwajasa Gotra.
