He studied at the Michigan military academy and at the university of Michigan; and was admitted to the bar. He has always been engaged in practical newspaper work; and
succeeded to the management of the Leavenworth Daily Times upon the death in 1904 of his father, Colonel Daniel R. Anthony. In 1903-05 he was mayor of Leavenworth, Kan. In 1907-11 he was a representative from Kansas to the sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a republican.

In 1835-45 he was town clerk of Taunton, Mass.; and in 1838-44 was county treasurer. In 1850 he moved to New Bedford, and there established the Evening Standard; and in 1864 began the publication of the Springfield Union. He
was postmaster of New Bedford; for twelve years was a special justice of the police court and was an active member of the city
government. He died Jan. 24, 1876, in New Bedford, Mass. Anthony, George T., soldier, merchant, manufacturer, journalist, governor, was born June 9, 1834, 'in Mayfield, N.Y. He was a merchant and manufacturer of hardware in Medina, N.Y. He was a captain in the civil war; and was brevetted major for services on the field. For six years he was publisher and proprietor of the

1868 was appointed collector of internal revenue. In 1877-79 he was the sixth governor of the state of Kansas. He died Aug. 5, 1896, in Topeka, Kan.

He was a member of the provincial council and of the general and state assemblies; was judge of the court of common pleas; and a colonel of state militia. He was so conspicuous and ardent a patriot during the revolution that the British offered a reward for his head.
