Appel, Theodore, clergyman, author, was born April 30, 1823, in Easton, Pa. In 1877 he was general superintendent of home missions of the reformed church; and traveled on business connected with that oflSce through Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. In 1881 he edited the Reformed Missionary Herald. He was the author of Recollections of College Life; and other works. He died in 1907 in Lancaster, Pa. Appel, Thomas Gilmore, educator, clergyman, college president, was born Nov. 14, 1829, in Easton, Pa. He was a pastor of the German reformed church in 1853-65. In 186571 he was president of Meroersburg college; and in 1878 was elected president of Franklin and Marshall college. He edited for several years the Mercersburg Review and the Reformed Quarterly Review. He died Sept. 17, 1898, in Lancaster, Pa.

Apple, George Markley, soldier, was born in Tennessee. In 1899 he became second lieutenant in the second regiment volunteer engineers; and the same year became first lieutenant in the thirty-ninth regiment volunteen infantry.

Here he began the importation of English books in conjunction with the dry goods business. Colonel Appleton has long taken an active part in New York City's favorite militia regiment, the seventh, of which he became a colonel in 1889. He is a. director of the American book company. Appleton, Daniel Sidney, publisher, was bom April 9, 1824, in Boston, Mass. He atta,ined success as one of the most prominent publishers in the United States. He died Nov. 13, 1890, on Staten Island, N.Y. Appleton, Francis Henry, agriculturist, statesman, was born June 17, 1847, in Boston, Mass. He engaged in extensive farming on his estate in Peabody, Mass. In 1893-93 he was a representative in the Massachusetts state legislature; and in 1893 was a delegate to the national republican convention. He was president of the Peabody institute; and president of the American forestry association.

Appleton, George Sewall, author, was born Aug. 11, 1821, in Andover, Mass. He was the author of Picturesque America; Picturesque Europe; and Picturesque Palestine. He died July 7, 1878, in Riverdale, N.Y. Appleton, Henry Cozzens, publisher, was born June 7, 1863, in New York City. In 1885 he graduated from Trinity college of Hartford, Conn. He is connected with the firm of D. Appleton and company, publishers, of
