The Narragansett Historical Register, in eight volumes; Rhode Island Vital Records, in seventeen volumes, the largest genealogist work ever edited and published by a single person in the United States. He is now engaged in the preparation of a Digest of Probate of Rhode Island.
Arnold, John Himes, educator, librarian, was born April 4, 1839, in Portsmouth, R.I. For eight years he was a teacher in various public schools of Rhode Island. Since 1873 he has been librarian of Harvard law school at Cambridge, Mass.
Arnold, John Motte, clergyman, author, in 1824 in Acra, N.Y. He filled several methodist episcopal pulpits in Detroit, Mich.; assisted in founding the Michigan Christian Advocate, which he edited until his death; and founded the Detroit methodist book concern. He was the author of Doctrines of Sanctification. He died Dec. 8, 1884, in Detroit, Mich. Arnold, Jonathan, surgeon, jurist, congressman, was born Dec. 14, 1741, in Providence, R.I. He was a member of the Rhode Island state assembly in 1776; and was the author of the act of 1776 repealing the laws providing for the oath of allegiance to the mother country. He was ti surgeon in the revolutionary army. After the war he removed to St. Johnsbury, Vt. and was judge of the Orange county court in 1782-98. In 1782-84 he was a, representative from RhodeIsland to the continental congress. He died Feb. 2, 1798, in St. Johnsbury, Vt. Arnold, Josiah, lawyer, jurist. In 1747-49 he was associate justice of the state supreme eourt of Rhode Island. Arnold, Lauren Briggs, agriculturist, author, was born in 1841 in New York. He was

frequently upon dairy husbandry. He was the author of American Dairying. He died in 1888 in New York. Arnold, Lewis Golding, soldier, was born Jan. 15, 1871, in Perth Amboy, N.J. In 1837 he graduated from West Point; and was assigned to the second artillery. In 1837-38 he served in the Florida Seminole war; in 183839 served in the Cherokee nation while emigrating the Indians to the west; and in 184041 was on the northern frontier during the Canada border disturbances. He served in the Mexican war; was in the siege of Vera Cruz, where he was slightly wounded; and was in the battles of Cerro Gordo, Amazoque, San Antonio, Contreras and Churubusco, being severely wounded in the last named battle. In 1854-57 he again served in Florida; and in 1856 commanded a battalion in lectured

He was next assigned to the defenses of Fort Pickens; and was brevetted a lieutenant-colonel in recognition of his services in the repulse of the enemy from Santa Rosa island. In 1862 he was made brigadier-general of volunteers; and promoted to the command of the department of Florida. He died Sept. 22, 1871, in South Boston, Mass. Somewhat recently one of the new batteries in the Fort Mott military reservation of New Jersey was named Battery Arnold in his honor. Arnold, Lemuel Hastings, merchant, congressman, governor, was born Jan. 29, 1792, in St. Johnsbury, Vt. In 1831-33 he was
governor of Rhode Island. He was a member of the governor's council during the Dorr rebellion in 1842. In 1845-47 he was a representative from Rhode Island to the twentyninth congress. He died June 27, 1852, in Kingston, R.I. Arnold, Marshall, educator, lawyer, congressman,, was born Oct. 21, 1845, in St. Francois county. Mo. He was professor in Arcadia college in 1870-71; has been deputy clerk of the circuit, county, and probate courts in St. Francois county. Mo.; was prosecuting attorney of Scott county. Mo.; served two terms in the state legislature of Missouri; and was presidential elector on the Hancock ticket. In 1891-95 he was a representative from Missouri to the fifty-second and fifty-third congresses as a democrat. He practices law in Benton, Mo. Arnold, Oliver, lawyer, founder, was bom in i 726 in Gloucester, R.I. In 1762 he began the practice of law in Providence, R.I.; and in 1766 became attorney-general for the state of Rhode Island. He took an active part in procuring the charter for the establish-

of what is now as Brown university. died Oct. 9, 1777, in Providence, R.I. Arnold, Peleg, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born in 1752 in Smithfleld, R.I. He was a member of the state assembly of Rhode Island. In 1795-1812 he was chief justice of the supreme court of Rhode Island. In 178789 he was a. delegate from Rhode Island to the continental congress. In 1788 he was appointed judge. He died Feb. 13, 1820, in Smithfleld, R.I. Arnold, Balph, geologist, paleontologist, scientist, was born April 14, 1875, in Marshalltown, Iowa. In 1894 he graduated from graduated from the Throop polytechnic institute; and subsequently graduated from the Leland Stanford university with the degrees of A.B., A.M. and Ph.D. In 1898-99 he was assistant in mineralogy at the Stanford university; and in 1899-1900 was professor of physics and chemistry at Hoitts school of Menlo Park, Cal.
