Baker, Andrew J., soldier, lawyer, statesman, was born June 6, 1833, In Marshall county, W.Va. During the civil war he was a lieutenant in the seventeenth regiment Iowa infantry. In 1868-69 he was a representative in the Missouri state legislature; and in 1871-73 was attorney-general of Missouri. He is a noted lawyer of Centervllle, Iowa; and In 1885-89 was attorney-genera-1 for the state of Iowa. Baker, Benjamin Franklin, musician, was born July 10, 1811, in Wenham, Mass. In 1843 he was superintendent of musical instruction in the grammar schools of Boston; and met eight thousand pupils a week. He introduced music into the public schools of Lowell and Lawrence; became editor of the
Boston Musical Journal; and from
Its foundation in 1857 was principal of the Boston music school. He died March 11, 1889, In Boston, Mass. Baker, Arthur Latham, educator, lawyer, mathematician, author, was born May 7, 1853, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1873 he graduated from Rensselaer polytechnic Institute and studied at the university of Gottlngen. In 1873-80 he was adjunct-professor of eivvll engineering at Lafayette college; and in 1880-89 practiced' law in Scranton, Pa. In 1889-91 he was profes-
sor of mathematics at the Stevens school of Hoboken, N.J. ; and In 1891-1901 filled the same chair In the university of Rochester; and since 1901 he has been head of the mathematics department at the manual training high school at Brooklyn, N.Y. He is the author of Graphic Algebra; Elliptic Functions; Solid Geometry; Conic Sections; and other works.
Baker, Benjamin Franklin, soldier, was born in New York. In 1861 he was a major in the forty-third regiment New York infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers. Baker, Benjamin M., lawyer, legislator, jurist, was born Jan. 20, 1850, In Girard, Ala. He was the first state superintendent of public education of Texas; and was a member of the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth state legislatures of Texas. He. served as judge of the thirty-first judicial district of Texas. Baker, Benjamin Webb, soldier, educator, clergyman, college president, was born Nov. 25, 1841, in Hutton, 111. He was educated at the Illinois state normal university; and at the Illinois Wesleyan university. During the civil war he served three years as a soldier in the twenty-fifth regiment Illinois volunteer infantry; and was several times wounded in battle. For four years he taugit school in Illinois; and has received the degrees of A.M., Ph.D. and D.D. Since 1874 he has been a clergyman of the methodist episcopal church; in 1885-89 was presiding elder; and in 1889-93 was financial secretary of the Illinois Wesleyan university. In 1893-98 he was president of Chaddock college at Quincy, 111.; and in 1898-1905 was president of the Missouri Wesleyan college at Cameron, Mo.
