Baker, Daniel, clergyman, college president author, was born Aug. 17, 1791, in Midway, Ga. His services were in demand as a. revivalist. After 1830 he continued as an evangelist, traveling in the south; and at last settled in Austin, Texas, where he founded a college and became its first president. Baker, David J., lawyer, jurist, was born in Illinois. In 1888 he became associate justice of the state supreme court of Illinois for

Baker, David Jewett, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Sept. 7, 1793, in East Haddam, Conn. In 1830-31 he was United States senator from Illinois; and carried through congress the important measure of selling the public lands to actual settlers in parcels of forty acres. He was United States attorney for Illinois in 1833-1841. He opposed the introduction of slavery into Illinois in 1833 with such energy that his opponents tried to kill him. He died Aug. 6, 1869, in Alton, 111.
Baker, De Forrest, physician, professor of was born Sept. 17, 1851, in Columbia, Lorain county, Ohio. He graduated from the Baldwin university; and from the Homoeopathic medical society of Cleveland, Ohio, now known as the Cleveland university of medicine and surgery. For ten years in 1889-98 he was professor of pediatries and clinical medicine in the Cleveland university of medicine and surgery. He has a large practice in Cleveland, Ohio; and is a, member of the leading medical associations and medicine,
scientific societies.

nois state legislature for two years, he resigned; and went to Mexico in 1846 as a colonel of volunteers. In 1845-51 he was a representative from Illinois to the twenty-
ninth 'and thirty-first congresses; after which he took an active part in the building of the Panama railroad. In 1859-63 he was United States senator. He raised a body of men in Philadelphia,
called the California regiment; and while gallantly leading them in battle at Leesburg against a superior force, was shot from his horse and killed, Oct. 31, 1861.
Baker, Dorsey Synge, physician, railroad builder, banker, was born Oct. 28, 1823, in Centerville, 111. In 1871 he took steps to organize a railroad company to build a line
from Walla Walla to Wallula. This road, the first in the territory, was built entirely from his own means and was finished in 1873.
Baker, Enos Pomeroy, clergyman, college president, was born Dec. 30, 1856, in West Bloomfleld, N.Y.He has had charge of several churches; and in 1895-98 was president of the Presbyterian college of the Southwest, at Del Norte, Col. He then took charge of the Presbyterian church of Modesto, Cal. Baker, Eugene, physician, surgeon, lecturer, public official, was born April 16, 1853, at Denton Corners, Fulton county, N.Y. He received a thorough education ; graduated from the university of Michigan with the degree of M.D.; and graduated from Cornell university with the degree of B.S. He has attained eminence in the practice of medicine in his native state; has filed the position of health officer and alderman of Ithaca, N.Y. and is still engaged in the active practice of medicine in that city. He is a noted lecturer at Cornell university on obstetrics and the practice of medicine.
Baker, Ezra, congressman, was born in Jersey. In 1815-17 he was a representative from New Jersey to the fourteenth congress. He died in New Jersey.

Oct. 20, 1860, in Goshen, Ind. He received the rudiments of his education in his native town; in 1876-78 attended the Indiana state university; and in 1883 graduated from the university of Michigan, from which institution he received the degreee of B.A. In 1879-83 he was literary editor of the University Chronicle. Until 1898 he practiced law in his native state; and was attorney for
the Lake Shore and Michigan southern railway and other prominent corporations. In 1898-1902 he was judge of the supreme court of Indiana; and since 1902 has been circuit judge of the United States circuit court for the seventh circuit.
Baker, Frank, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born May 11, 1840, in Melmore, Ohio. In 1862-65 he served as a private soldier in the eighty-fourth regiment Ohio volunteer infantry. In 1865-87 he practiced law in Chicago, III.; and since 1887 has been judge of the circuit court of Cook county.
