He died in June, 1885, in New Haven, Conn. Barber, Laird Howard, educator, lawyer, congressman, was born Oct. 25, 1848, near Mifflinburg, Pa. In 1881 he was admitted to the bar in Carbon county. Pa.; and became a noted lawyer of Mauch Chunk. In 18991901 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the fifty-sixth congress as a democrat.
Barber, Levi, congressman, was born in county. Conn. In 1817-19 and 1821-33 .he was a representative from Ohio to the fifteenth and seventeenth congresses. He died in Ohio. Barber, Mrs. Mary Augustine, educator, founder, was born in 1789 in Newtown, Conm. She entered the visitation convent of Georgetown in 1818 with her four daughters. She was a woman of superior education; and the convent and schools progressed rapidly during her residence. In 1836 she founded a convent of the visitation in Kaskaskia, 111., where she remained until 1844. She died in 1860, in Mobile, Ala. Barber, Merritt, soldier, was born in Vermont. In 1863 he entered the civil war as a private in the tenth regiment Vermont volunteer infantry; was made first lieutenant the same year; and in 1864 was brevetted major of volunteers. He then entered the regular army; and in 1901 was made brigadier-general of volunteers in the United States army. Barber, Noyes, merchant, lawyer, congressman, was born April 28, 1781, in Groton, Conn. He was in early life a merchant, but a lawyer by profession. In 1821-35 he was a representative from Connecticut in the seventeenth to the twenty-third congresses. He died Jan. 3, 1845, in Groton, Conn. Barbour, Mrs. A. Maynard, author, was born in New York. She is the wife of A. Maynard Barbour, of Philadelphia, Pa. She is the author of Told in the Rockies; That Main waring Affair; At the Time Appointed. Barbour, Ashburn IC, lawyer, librarian, was born Jan. 7, 1856, in Falmouth, Ky. He is a lawyer by profession. He is librarian of thf state supreme court of Montana; and librarian of the law department of the Montana state library. Barbour, Erwin Hinckley, educator, geologist, author, was born near Oxford, Ohio. Since 1891 he has been professor of geology at the university of Nebraska, and also state geologist of Nebraska. He is the author of numerous Monographs on geological, paleontological and zoological subjects.
Barbour, George Harrison, manufacturer, 26, 1843, in Collinsville, Conn. He is president and general manager of the Michigan stove company; first president of the chamber of commerce; and ex-president of the National association of stove manufacturers. He served as president of the city council of Detroit in 1888. Barbour, James, governor, diplomat, United States senator, was born June 10, 1875, in Orange county, Va. He was speaker of the house of delegates; and in 1812-14 was governor of Virginia. In 1815-25 he was a representative from Virginia to the United States senate. He moved to Michigan about 1827; was elected justice of the peace; and became commissioner of internal improvements. He was county judge for eight years.
