Barclay, William Franklin, physician, inventor, was born Feb. 13, 1843, in Jacksonville, Pa. He discovered and applied gold compounds in 1893, in whicb lie successfully
combined gold with bromine, mercury, arsenic, and other metals, in the face of the decree of chemistry that such compounds were impossible. Bard, David, congressman, was born about 1750. In 1795-99 and 1803-15 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the fourth and fifth and the eighth to the thirteenth
He died in 1815 in Virginia. Bard, John, physician, founder, was born Feb. 1, 1716, in Burlington, N.J. In 1759 when an epidemic of malignant fever threatened New York he recommended the purchase of Bedlow's island for the isolation of infectious diseases; and was placed in charge of the hospital that was built in accordance with his suggestion. He died March, 30, 1799, in Hyde Park, N.J. Bard, John, theologian, founder, was born June 2, 1819, in Hyde Park, N.Y. He was the founder of St. Stephen's college of Annandale, N.Y., a diocesan training-school for students for the ministry of the protestant episcopal church. He now resides in England. Bard, Peter, lawyer, jurist. In 1721 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of New Jersey. He died in New Jersey. Bard, Samuel, physician, founder, author, was born April 1, 1742, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1767-98 he practiced medicine in New York City. He founded the college of physicians and surgeons; and in 1813 became its president. He was the author of The Shepherd's Guide. He died May 24, 1821 in Hyde Park, N.Y. Bard, Samuel, territorial governor. In 1870 he was territorial governor of Idaho. Bard, Thomas Robert, lawyer, United States senator, was born Dec. 8, 1841, in CJhambersburg, Pa. In 1858 he graduated from Chambersburg academy and studied law. He was a strong union man during the civil war. In 1864 he went to California; and there engaged in wharving and warehousing, banking, petroleum mining, sheep raising congresses.
and horticulture and is largely interested in lands and the development of the oil industry in southern California. In 1880 and in
1892 he was a presidential elector from Ventura county, Cal. In 1900-03 he was United States senator from California to flU a vacancy. Bard, William, founder, was born in October, 1777, in New York. He was a pioneer in life insurance in the United States; and for twelve years from its foundation in 1830 the president of the New York life insurance and trust company. He died Oct. 17, 1853, in
New York
City.
Bardeen, Charles Valdo, lawyer, jurist, was born Sept. 23, 1850, in Brookfield, N.Y. In 1855 he was brought to "Wisconsin; and was educated at Albion academy and at the university of Wisconsin. He served as city at-
torney of Warsaw, Wis.; was district attorney of Marathon county. Wis.; and was judge of the sixteenth judicial circuit of Wisconsin. In 1898-1903 he was associate justice of the state supreme court of Wisconsin. He died March 20, 1903, in Madison, Wis. Bardeen, Charles William, soldier, educator, publisher, author, was born Aug. 28, 1847, in Groton, Mass. During the civil war he served in the first regiment Massachusetts volunteers. For many years he was engaged in educational work; and in 1891-95 was director of the national educational association. He is the author of Manual of School Law; A System of Rhetoric; and a score of other educational works. Barden, William Jones, soldier, was born in Connecticut. In 1894 he graduated from the military academy; and in 1903 attained the rank of captain.
Bardon, Thomas, educator, civil engineer, banker, manufacturer, business president, was born Oct. 22, 1848, in Maysville, Ky. After receiving his education he became a civil engineer and school teacher; and subsequently attained success as a manufacturer and banker of Ashland, Wis. He has filled
numerous public
offices
of trust;
and
for
four successive terms was mayor of his city. He is president of the chamber of commerce president of the Ashland sulphite fibre company; president of the Pioneer iron company and president of the Ashland national bank. Barefoot, Walter, colonial governor. In 1685-86 he was colonial governor of New

received his education in New Mexico. Early in life he moved to
Colorado; and is now a successful cattle and sheep grower of Trinidad, Col. In 1872-74 he was a member of the territorial legislature; and in 1875 was a member of the constitutional convention. Since 1876 he has been a member of the state senate of Colorado, his present term term expiring in 1908, which will make a total length of service of thirty-two years in the senate, a much longer service than any living man has ever served in the United States.
