Barlow, Bradley, merchant, banker, congressman, was born May 13, 1814, in Fairfield, Vt. He served six terms as a representative in the Vermont state legislature and two terms as state senator. He was twice a member of state constitutional conventions. He was county treasurer for several years. In 1879-81 he was a, representative from Vermont to the forty-sixth congress. He died about 1900 in St. Albans, Vt. Barlow, Charles Averill, merchant, farmer, congressman, was bom March 17, 1858, in Cleveland, Ohio. He removed to San Luis Obispo county, Cal., where he acquired land and engaged in wheat farming. He was state lecturer of the Farmers' alliance for one term; and was elected to the California state assembly in 1893. In 1897-99 he was a representative from California to congress.

Barlow, Francis thanning, soldier, lawyer, statesman, was born Oct. 19, 1834, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a general in the civil war. In Grant's campaign he captured the whole division of General Johnston; and in the final struggle and pursuit of Lee's routed army he rendered essential service. He was secretary of state of New York in 1865-68; and was then appointed United States marshal of the southern district of the state. In 187373 he was attorney-general of the state of New York. Barlow, Joel, patriot, diplomat, poet, was born March 35, 1755, in Reading, Conn. As an author he belonged to the first class of his time in America; and was one of the celebrated Hartford city wits. His Vision of Columbus, a poem in

tha Washington, was much admired. His most elaborate work, Columbiad, an epic poem, is considered by critics to be a, failure. He died Dec. 24, 1813, near Cracow, in Poland, while United States ambassador. Barlow, Samuel Latham Mitchell, lawyer, author, was born June 5, 1826, in Granville, Mass. For forty years he practiced law in New York City. He gave much time to the collection of rare and curious books. His 11bary of Americana was among the largest in the country. In connection with Henry Harrisse he edited Notes on Columbus, an invaluable work for the biography and bibliograof the discoverer of the new world. He died July 10, 1890, in Glen Cove, N.Y. Barlow, Stephen, business man, congressman. In 1837-29 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the twentieth congress. He died in Pennsylvania. Barlow, Thomas Harris, inventor, was born Aug. 5, 1789, in Nicholas county, Ky. In 1835 he settled in Lexington, Ky.; and in 1851 finished his first planetarium, which is now in Transylvania university in that town. This ingenious and useful piece of mechanism is now in use at West Point, the Washington observatory and other institutions. He died in 1865, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Barnabee, Henry Clay, actor, singer, was born Nov. 11, 1843, in Portsmouth, N.H. He sang in church choirs in Boston, Jamaica Plain and Roxbury, Mass.; and for nineteen years was a member of the church of the Unity quartette of Boston, Mass. Since 1865 he has been a public singer and monologue artist; and in 1870 organized the Barnabee operetta company. In 1879 he joined the Boston ideal opera company; and
