Barnard, William Stebbins, naturalist, inwas born Feb. 28, 1849, in Canton, 111. In 1870 he accompanied the scientific exploring expedition to Brazil as assistant geologist. Since 1874 he has lectured on natural history at various schools and colleges; and in 1880-85 was entomologist at the United States department of agriculture at Washington, D.C. He has made inventions of harvesters, both for corn and cotton; and also of means and appliances for the destruction of injurious insects. He also devised the Harvard book-rack, improved paperfile holdventor, author,
and similar articles. Barnes, Abraham, patriot, was born about 1724 in St. Mary's county, Md. In 1754 he was a representative from Maryland to the colonial congress. He died in Maryland. Barnes, Alanson H., lawyer, jurist, was born in New York. He removed to Wisconsin and practiced law; and in 1873 was appointed United States associate justice for the ers

Barnes, Albert Edmund, soldier, clergyman, was born May 30, 1873, in Iowa. Hewas a second lieutenant in the civil war; and now fills a pastorate in Minneapolis, Minn. Barnes, Alfred C, soldier, banker, founder, publisher, author, was born Oct. 27, 1842, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was educated at the Brooklyn polytechnic institute; and is a son of A. S. Barnes, the well known publisher. He was elected colonel of the thirteenth regiment New York volunteers; and attained the rank of brigadier general in the New York national guards. He founded the Astor place bank of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and in 1891 division I'ork
became its president. He was vice-president of the American book company; and a, director in several large corporations. He planned and supervised Barnes' Brief History of America. He died Nov. 10, 1905, in Brooklyn.
