He subsequently removed to Tennessee; and was elected speaker of the house of representatives of that state. He died Oct. 16, 1852 in Tennessee. Barriger, John Walker, soldier, author, was born July 9, 1833, near Shelbyville, Ky. In 1856 he graduated from the West Point military academy; he was second appointed a lieutenant of artillery; and in 1865 became brigadier-general by brevet in the United States army for faithful and meritorious services during the civil war. subsistence; he became lieutenant-colonel in 1892; became colonel in 1894; and in 1904 was made brigadier-general, United States army. He was the author of Legislative History of the Subsistence Department of the United States Army from 1775 to 1876. He died in 1906 in New York City. Barringer, Daniel Moreau, lawyer, diplomat, congressman, was born in 1807 in Cabarras county, N.C. In 1829 he was elected a member of the North Carolina state legislature, in which position he continued for a. number of years. In 1843-49 he was a representative from North Carolina to the twenty-eighth, twenty-ninth and thirtieth congresses. He was then appointed minister to Spain. On his return home he was elected to the state legislature. He was elected a delegate to the peace congress of 1861 and also to the Philadelphia national union convention of 1866. He died Sept. 1, 1873, in Green Brier Springs, Va. Barringer, Paul Brandon, educator, physician, author, was born Feb. 13, 1857, in Concord. N.C. and is a son of the late General Rufus Barringer. He attended the university of Virginia; in 1877 received the degree of M.D. from the
medical department of that institution; and in 1878 he graduated from the university of New York, from which institution he subsequently received the degree of LL.D. Since 1888 he has been professor of physiology and materia medica at the university of Virginia; and in 1896-1903 was chairman of the faculty of that institution of learning. He practices medicine in Blacksburg, Va. and in 1907-08 was president of the medical society of Virginia. He
is the author of The American Negro, His Past and Future; and various other articles on the race problem. Barringer, Daniel Moreau, lawyer, geologist, scientist, was born May 25, 1860, in Raleigh, N.C. In 1882-89 he practiced law; and since 1891 has been a consulting and mining engineer of Philadelphia, Pa. He has made valuable researches on mine and mining in the United States. Barringer, Rufus, soldier, lawyer, statesman, was born Dec. 2, 1821, in Cabarrus county, N.C. He was commissioned brigadier-
general in the confederate service; and assigned to the command of the North Carolina cavalry brigade. He took part in seventy-six actions; and was several times severely wounded. In 1875 he was elected to the state constitutional convention; in 1880 was an unsuccessful candidate for lieutenantgovernor; and was a member of the Republican convention that nominated Garfield for the presidency. He died Feb. 3, 1895, in Charlotte, N.C. Barringer, Victor Clay, lawyer, jurist, was born March 29, 1827, near Concord, N.H. In 1860 he was appointed to the North Carolina state legislature. In 1868 he was appointed to adjust the code of civil procedure to the former laws of North Carolina; and to help compile the revised statutes of the United States. For nearly twenty years he was American member of the court of appeals of Egypt. He died May 27, 1896, in Washington, D.C. Barritt, Frances Fuller, poet, was born in ]S26 in Rome, N.Y. She was a favorite contributor to the Home Journal, Azlea, a, tragedy, was written about this time; and in 185] she published a volume entitled Poems of Imagination and Sentiment, by herself and her sister Metta. He is president of the Carpenter steel works of Reading, Pa.; The Kentucky coal, iron and development company; the Lyons and Campbell ranch and cattle company, and the Gila farm company.
