In 1775-79 he was a delegate from New Hampshire to the continental congress; and was a signer of the articles of confederation and declaration of independence. Bartlett, Peter Mason, clergyman, college president, banker, was bom Feb. 6, 1820, in Salisbury, Conn. He served as chaplain of the first New York mounted rifles in 1862-63. In 1868 he was elected president of Maryville college of Tennessee; and for nearly twenty years filled the chair of mental and moral philosophy and of didactic theology in that institution. He has been president of several business firms in Tennessee; and is now president of the bank of Maryville. Bartlett, Samuel Colcord, college president author, was born Nov. 25, 1817, in Salisbury, N.H. He became one of the editors of the Congregational Herald. In 1858 he was chosen professor of biblical literature in the Chicago theological seminary; he was elected president of Vermont university in 1866; and in 1877-92 was president of Dartmouth college. He was the author of Life and Death Eternal; from Egypt to Palestine; and other works. He died Nov. 16, 1898, in Hanover.

R.I. He is a successful contractor of Worcester, Mass. He is the author of Genealogy of the Bartletts. Bartlett, Washington, governor, author, was bom Feb. 29, 1824, in Savannah, Ga. He published the first book printed in California entitled as It is and as It May Be. In 1886-87 he was governor of California. He died Sept. 13, 1887, in Oakland, Cal.
1811-13 he was a representative from New Hampshire to the twelfth congress. He was a presidential elector in 1792 and 1835. His father, bearing the same name, was the first governor of New Hampshire. He died April 14, 1838, in Stratham, N. H.
Bartlett, Washington Allen, naval officer, was born about 1820 in Maine. He entered the United States navy in 1833; and was alcade of San Francisco, Cal. He changed the city's name from Yerba Buena to San Francisco. He died in 1871 in New York City.
