Abemethy, George, governor, was born Oct. 8, 1807, in Scotland. He came to the United States with his parents in 1809, and settled in New York state. In 1840 he moved to Oregon was mayor of Portland ; and was governor of Oregon in 1845-49, before the creation of Oregon as a territory. He died May 2, 1877, in Portland, Ore. Abemethy, Robert Labon, educator, college president, founder, was born April 8, 1832, in Lincoln county, N.C. In 1840 he became a minister in the methodist church; and was a distinguished educator. He founded Rutherford college of North Carolina; and in 1850 became its first president. During his forty years of active duty he educated ten thousand boys and girls. He died Nov. 28, 1894, in Eutherfordton, N.C.
Abemethy, William Ellis, educator, college president, author, was born May 28, 1860, in Eutherford College, N.C. He has been president of Eutherford college since 1894. He is the author of a volume of lectures. Abert, George, pioneer, manufacturer, legislator, was born May 10, 1817, in France. In 1839 he erected the first bakery on the west side of the city of Milwaukee, Wis. In 1846 he was chosen alderman; and for six terms in 1861-73 he was a member of the state legislature. In 1865 he established the first iron foundry. He died Oct. 14, 1890, in Milwaukee, Wis.

ence, which was subsequently merged into the Smithsonian institute. He died Sept. 37 1863, in Washington, D.C. Abert, Silvanus Thayer, civil engineer, author, was born July 33, 1838, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was a civil engineer in the United States service; and from 1873 was in charge of the geographical division extending from Washington to Wilmington, N.C. He is the
author of Notes Historical and Statistical upon the Projected Eoute for an Interoceanic Canal between the Atlantic and Pacific. He died in 1903 in Washington, D.C. Abert, William, soldier, was born Nov. 18, 1820, in Mount Holly, N.J. He graduated from West Point in 1842. After service in the infantry he was transferred to the topographical engineers; and was engaged on the survey of the northern lakes in 1843-44. He then served on the expedition to New Mexico, and published a report. In 1848-50 he was assistant in drawing at West Point and in 1851-60 was engaged in the improvement of western rivers. During the civil war he served with distinction. Abert, William Stone, lawyer, author, was born July 37, 1845, in Washington, D.C. He is a prominent lawyer of Washington; and among the notable cases in which he has figured may be mentioned the Washington city postoffiee ease and the Powell will case. Abert, William Stretch, soldier, was born Feb. 1, 1836, in Washington, D.C. He served in the civil war; was brevetted major in 1862; and brigadier-general in 1865. He died Aug. 25, 1867, in Galveston, Texas. Able, A. H., naval ofiicer, was born about 1830 in Pennsylvania. In 1861 he was appointed third assistant engineer in the United States navy; in 1862 became second assistant engineer; in 1864 was promoted to first assistant engineer; and in 1874 was promoted to chief engineer. In 1894 he was a member of the naval engineer examining board; in 1897-99 was president of the engineer examining board at Philadelphia, Pa.; and in 1899 was retired from active duty.

He is senior partner of Abraham and Straus, dry goods merchants, whose store is now the leading bazaar of Brooklyn, employing more than two thousand persons.
