He served as a union soldier during the civil war in company B, eighteenth regiment Kansas cavalry. For two years he was attorney for Mitchell county, Kan.; and in 1890-94 was judge of the seventeenth judicial district court of Kansas. Bertram, Henry, soldier, was born in Germany. He served in the United States army in 1846-51 and in 1861-65, when he was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He died Sept. 25, 1878. jurist,
Berwald, William, musician, composer, was born Dec. 26, 1864, in Mecklenburg, Germany. He studied music at Munich. He has been conductor of orchestra and chorus in Russia. Since 1892 he has been professor of the piano and theory of music in Syracuse university of New York; in 1893 was made full professor; and since 1903 has been master of music. He is the author of several valuable and popular compositions. Bessels, Emil, scientist, author, was bom in 1847 in Germany. He was chief of the scientific department of the Polaris expedition of 1870-73; and in 1876 edited the first three volumes of scientific results of that expedition. He was also in the expedition of Dorst and Weyprecht; and has edited reports of the United States naval institute. Bessey, Charles Edwin, botanist, author, was born May 31, 1845, in Milton, Ohio. of Nebraska. He is the author of Geography of Iowa; Botany for High Schools and Colleges; The Essentials of Botany; Elementary Botanical Exercises ; and other works. Beshoar, Michael, physician, legislator, journalist, was born on Feb. 25, 1833, near Milflintown, Pa. In 1853 he graduated from the university of Michigan. He was a representative in the legislatures of Arkansas; f^k and in the territory L and later the state of mm fHP^ IE. Colorado. He was a surgeon in the Arkansas state militia; was surgeon of the provisional, and later the regular army of the
