Boyce, James Petigru, clergyman, legislator, was bom in 1827 in Charleston, S.C. He served in the confederate army as a chaplain. He was a member of the state legislature of South Carolina in 1862-66. After the civil war he gave his attention to the resuscitating and re-establishing the southern baptist theological seminary in Kentucky; and in 1874 secured pledges to the amount of ninety thousand dollars for the support of the seminary. He died Dec. 28, 1888, in France.

Boyce, William D., journalist, publisher, founder, was born June 16, 1859, in Allegheny county. Pa. He established a newspaper patent inside business in Chicago, 111.; and the Saturday subsequently established Blade. He bought the Chicago Ledger; and later established Boyce's Monthly, now the Woman's World. He is president of the W. D. Boyce paper mills company; and is the owner of the Boyce office building in Chicago, 111.

Boyce, William Henry, lawyer, jurist, was born Nov. 28, 1855, in Sussex county, Del. He has been president of the Georgetown board of public education; and of the town commissioners of that place. In 1897 he was appointed secretary of the state of Delaware; and in the same year became an associate judge of the supreme court of Delaware. Boyd, A. Hunter, lawyer, jurist, was born July 15, 1849, in Winchester, Va. Since 1893 he has been an associate judge of the court of appeals of Maryland.

Ohio; and in 1879-80 he was principal of the high schools in Van Wert, Ohio. In 1880-88 he was superintendent of schools in Van Wert, Ohio; and in 1888-92 was superintendent of schools at Arkansas City, Kan. In 1890-1900 he was director of the national educational association and has been president of the Oklahoma board of education. Since 1892 he has been president of the uni;

versity of Oklahoma. Boyd, Ellen Wright, educator, author, was bom Sept. 8, 1833, in Winsted, Conn. She was educated at the Collegiate institute of

New

Haven, Conn. For four years she was engaged in educational work as head of the

Church school of Augusta, Maine; and for over a quarter of a century was in full charge of St. Agnes' school of Albany, N. Y. and is now principal emeritus. For more than thirty years she

was

closely

identified

with educational work. She is the author of Outlines of Religious Instruction; and Famous Art Galleries.
