After the war he was appointed naval officer for the port of Boston, which office he held until his death. He died Oct. 4, 1830, in Boston. Boyd, Joseph Fulton, soldier. He served as captain and assistant quartermaster in the

war; and in 1865 was brevetted major, lieutenant-colonel, colonel and brigadiergeneral United States volunteers for faithful and meritorious services during the civil civil

war. Boyd, Kate Parker, painter, artist, was born Oct. 23, 1836, in New York City. She won a number of medals and prizes in the Centennial exposition in Philadelphia; and in various state and county exhibitions. She writes and draws for the American Garden Boyd, Linn, legislator, congressman, was born Nov. 22, 1800, in Nashville, Tenn. In 1837 he was elected to the state legislature of Tennessee, serving four terms. In 1835-37 and 1839-55 he was a representative from Kentucky to the twenty-fourth and twentysixth to the thirty-third congresses; and in 1831-55 he was speaker of the house in the thirty-second and thirty-third congresses. He also served one term as lieutenant-governor of Kentucky. He died Dec. 16, 1859, in

Paducah, Ky. Boyd, Orsemus Bronson, soldier, was born In New York. He entered the civil war in 1861 as a corporal; became second lieutenant in 1862; and in 1863-67 attended the Lnited States military academy, from which he graduated. In 1868 he became first lieutenant in the eighth United States cavalry; and was made captain in 1882. He died July 22, 1885.

Boyd, Pliny Steele, clergyman, author, was born May 18, 1836, in York, N.Y. He was the author of Up and Down the Merrimac; Rex Ringnold's School; and Sermons and Essays. He died Dec. 6, 1887, in Granby, Mass. Boyd, Samuel Stillman, lawyer, jurist, was born in 1803 in Portland, Maine. In 1836 he graduated from Bowdoin college; and immediately moved west. In 1837 he became a resident of Natchez, Miss. He was one of the ablest lawyer of Mississippi; and became a great jurist. In 184950 he attended by legislative appointment the famous Nashville convention. He took a prominent part in all movements for the welfare of his adopted state; and drafted many of the legislative bills of that state. He died about 1870 in Natchez, Miss.

Boyd, Thomas A., soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born June 25, 1830, in Adams county. Pa. He removed to Illinois in 1856; entered the union army in 1861; and was commissioned captain. He was elected a state senator in 1866; and was re-elected in ]870. In 1877-81 he was a representative from Illinois to the forty-fifth and the fortysixth congresses. He died May 28, 1897, in Lewiston, 111. Boyd, Thomas Duckett, educator, college president, was born Jan. 20, 1854, in Wytheville, Va. In 1888-96 he was president of the state normal school at Natchitoches, La.; and since 1896 has been president of the Louisiana state university. Boyd, Trustin B., merchant, president St. Louis exposition, was born Dec. 25, 1854, in Indianapolis, Ind. He received the rudiments of his education in the

He was the first governor of Washington territory. He died April 22, 1896, in Jersey City, N.J. Boyd, William P., author, genealogist, was born March 26, 1849. He is the author of History of Conesus and Boyd's Genealogy. Boyden, Albert Gardner, educator, author, was born in 1827 in New England. He graduated from the Bridgewater normal school; and from 1860 was principal of that institution. He was the avithor of History and Alumni Record of the State Normal School of Bridgewater, Mass. Boyden, Emily M. B., artist, composer, was born Dec. 14, 1838, in Morrisville, N.Y. As a needle painting artist she received first premium at the World's fair at New Orleans; and as a composer, many of her compositions are sung in the public schools of Chicago, 111. Boyden, Nathaniel, lawyer, congressman, was born Aug. 16, 1796, in Franklin township, Mass. He was elected a number of times to the North Carolina state legislature. In 1847-49 and 1867-69 he was a representative from North Carolina to the thirtieth and fortieth congresses. He died in North
