He died Sept. 27, 1876, in Galveston, Texas. Bragg, Edward Stuyvesant, soldier, lawyer, diplomat, congressman, was born Feb. 20, 1827, in Unadilla, N.Y. He moved to Fond du Lac, Wis.; and was elected district attorney in 1854. He served in the union army in 1861-65; rising to the rank of brigadier-general. He was appointed postmaster of Fond du Lac in 1866 was a state senator in 1868-69; and was a delegate to the democratic national convention of 1872. In 187783 and 1885-87 he was a representative from Wisconsin to the forty-fifth, forty-sixth, forty-seventh and forty-ninth congresses. In 1888 he was appointed minister to Mexico. Bragg, John, congressman, was born in North Carolina. In 1851-53 he was a representative from Alabama to the thirty-second congress. He declined a re-election and devoted himself to agricultural pursuits. He died

Bragg, Thomas, lawyer. United States senator, governor, was born Nov. 9, 1810, in Warrenton, N.C. In 1842 he was elected to the assembly of North Carolina; and in 1853 was a presidential elector. He was the twenty-sixth governor of North Carolina for two terms in 1855-59. In 1859-61 he was United States senator. He died Jan. 21, 1872, in Raleigh, N.C. Bragg, William Chittenden, lawyer, author, was born in 1845 in Missouri. He was a lawyer of St. Louis, Mo. He is the author of Digest of Missouri Court of Appeals; and Missouri Masonic Laws. Brailey, Moses Randolph, soldier, was born in New York. In 1862 he became major in the thirty-eighth regiment Ohio infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. Brain, Belle Marvel, artist, author, was born Aug. 4, 1859, in Springfield, Ohio. In 1878-95 she was supervisor of drawing at the Springfield public schools. Brainard, John Gardiner Calkins, journalpoet, was born Oct. 21, 1796, In New London, Conn. He was for a time editor of the Connecticut Mirror. His Falls of Niagara, written while the printer's boy was waiting for his regular contribution to the paper, is generally considered the best short poem written on that subejct. He was the author of a volume of poems. He died Sept. 26, ist,

Braine, Daniel Lawrence, naval ofiicer, was born May 18, 1829, in New York City. In 1861 he attacked the confederate gunboats above Cape Hatteras; dispersed two regiments of infantry; and sunk two barges filled with soldiers, rescuing the twentieth Indiana regiment who were cut off from Hatteras inlet by the enemy. In 1862 he received his commission as lieutenant-commander. He became captain in 1874; commodore in 1885; and subsequently attained the rank of rearadmiral. He died Jan. 30, 1898, in Brooklyn,
