In 1860 he was nominated by the southern democratic party as their candidate for president. In 1861-63 he was United States senator. He took part in the civil war as a general; and in 1865 was appointed secretary of war of the confederacy. He died May 17, 1875, in Lexington, Ky. Breckinridge, Clifton Rhodes, soldier, cotton planter, congressman, was born Nov. 22, 1846, in Lexington, Ky. He served as a private soldier and midshipman in the confederate service. He engaged in cotton planting in Arkansas and aslo in the commission business at Pine Bluff, Ark. In 1883-93 he- was a representative from ArKansas to the fortylature.
