Brent, William L., congressman, was born Md. In 1823-29 he was a representative from Louisiana to the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth congresses. He died July 7, 1848, in St. Martinsville, La. Brentano, Lorenzo, journalist, legislator, congressman, was born Nov. 14, 1813, in Germany. He became editor of the Illinois Staats-Zeitung; and in 1862 was a member of the state legislature. For five years he was president of the Chicago board of education. In 1868 he was presidential elector on the in Charles county,

Brenton, Samuel, clergyman, college president, congressman, was born Nov. 33, 1810, in Gallatin, Ky. He was a clergyman in 1830-48. In 1851-53 and 1855-57 he was a representative from Indiana to the thirtysecond and thirty-fourth congresses. He was elected to the thirty-fifth congress, but died before taking his seat. He was also president of the Fort Wayne college. He died March 39, 1857, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Brenton, William, colonial governor, was born in England. He was lieutenant-governor of Rhode Island prior to 1660; was president of the colony in 1660-61; and governor under the charter obtained from Charles II in 1666-69. His original grant gave him a certain number of acres for every mile of land surveyed; and on the strength of this he secured much valuable property. He was one of the nine original proprietaries of Rhode Island. His name is preserved in Brenton's Point and Brenton's Reef, Naragansett Bay. He died in 1674, in Newport, R.I. schools ; at the Baptist college of Oregon City; and at the McMinnville college of Oregon. He was appointed justice of the peace; was the first

Grant and Colfax ticket. He was United States consul at Dresden in 1872-76. In 187779 he was a representative from Illinois to the forty-fifth congress as a republican. He died Sept. 17, 1891, in Chicago, 111. Brentano, Theodore, lawyer, jurist, was born March 29, 1854, in Kalamazoo, Mich. Since 1859 he has resided in Chicago, 111.; and in 1882 was admitted to the bar. In 1888 he was assistant city attorney of Chicago, 111.; and since 1891 has been judge of the superior court of Cook county. 111. Brenton, Andrew T., physician, public official, surgeon, was born Sept. 15, 1847, in Indianapolis, Ind. He was educated in the Iowa state university; in 1869 graduated in medicine from the college of physicians and surgeons at Keokuk, Iowa; and subsequently he graduated from Barnes medical college of St. Louis, Mo. He has been coroner; was a member of the prison board of medical

Brett, William Howard, librarian, was bom in 1846 in B'raceville, Ohio. Since 1884 he has been librarian of the public library at Cleveland, Ohio. In 1897 he was president of the American library association. Bretz, John L., educator, lawyer, jurist,

banker, congressman, was born Sept. 21, 1853, near Huntingburg, Ind. He located in Jasper in 1880; and was prosecuting attorney of the eleventh judicial circuit in 188490. In 1891-95 he was a representative from
