Brown, John, abolitionist, was born May 9, 1800, in Torrington, Conn. In 1855 he emigrated to Kansas, where he took an active part in the contest of that state caused by the passage of the Kansas -Nebraska bill, advocating squatter-sovereignty. In 1859 he formed the bold plan of freeing the slaves in Virginia; and on the night of October 16 he surprised Harper's Ferry, seized the arsenal and armory and took forty prisoners. But his small band was soon overpowered and captured. He was tried in November, and hanged Dee. 2, 1859. Brown, John, congressman, was born in Mifflin county, Pa. In 1856 he was one of the electors for Fremont; and in 1860 was a delegate to the Chicago convention, where Lincoln was nominated. On his return he was thrown into prison on the charge of circulating incendiary documents. At the beginning of the civil war the confederate authorities offered one thousand dollars for his apprehension. He subsequently received an appointment in Washington. In 1861 he entered the confederate army and was made captain; and served throughout the civil war, rising to the rank of major-general. He was president of the state constitutional convention of 1870; and in 1871-75 was the eighteenth governor of Tennessee. In 1876 he was elected vice-president of the Texas and pacific railway company. He died on Aug. 17, 1889, in Red Boiling Springs, Tenn. Brown, John Carter, merchant, philanthropist, was born Aug. 28, 1797, in Providence, R.I. He was part owner of several cotton factories and was interested in business enterras.
