Bruce, Alexander Campbell, designer, archwas born March 16, 1835, in Fredericksburg, Va. He has designed a number of court houses and public buildings in Knoxville, Tenn., prominent among them is the Chattanooga courthouse. The finest buildings in Atlanta were designed by him, among them the Technological institute, Kiser law construction, high school and county courthouse. Bruce, Andrew Alexander, educator, lawyer, was born April 15, 1866, in Madras, India. He was educated in the colleges of England; in 1890 graduated with the degree of A.B. from the university of Wisconsin; and in 1893 received the degree of LL.B. from the college of law in the same institution. In 1893-98 he practiced law in Chicago, 111. In 1898-1903 he was assistant professor of law in the university of Wisconsin. Since 1902 he has been professor of law, and since 1904 has been dean of the college of law in the university of North Dakota. He has been president of the state board of bar exitect,
aminers of North Dakota; and was a delegate to the universal congress of lawyers and jurists at St. Louis in 1904. He is a frequent contributor to magazines and newspapers. Bruce, Archibald, physician, educator, scientist, was born in February, 1777, in New York City. In 1807 he was appointed professor of materia medica and mineralogy in the college of physicians and surgeons; and after 1812 filled the same chair in Rutgers college. He projected the American Mineralogical Journal in 1810, and edited it until 1814. His chemical analysis of native magnesia from New Jersey made known to science the mineral now called after him, Brucite. He died Feb. 22, 1818, in New York City. Bruce, Blanche K., planter, United States senator, was born of slave parents March 1, 1841, in Prince Edward county, "^a. He received a limited education; and became a planter in Mississippi in 1869. He was a member of the Mississippi levee board; and sheriff and tax collector of Bolivar county in 1872-75. In 1875-81 he was United States senator. For many years he was register of the treasury at Washington, D.C. He died March 17, i898, in Washington, D.C. Bruce, Dwight Hall, journalist, author, was born June 21, 1834, in Lenox, N.Y. He became the managing editor of the Oswego
Times; and in 1869 he became part owner and editor of the Syracuse Journal. He was postmaster of Syracuse in 1871-80; and in 190O again held that office. He is the author of The Memorial History of the City of Syracuse. Bruce, George, typefounder, inventor, was born July 5, 1781, in Scotland. He invented the only type-casting machine that has stood the test of time. He died July 6, 1866, in
New York
City.
Bruce, Henry, naval officer, was born Feb. 12, 1798, in Machias, Maine. He was appointed to the navy as midshipman from Massa-
chusetts in 1813; was commissioned commodore in 1862; and retired in 1867. He died Feb. 5, 1895, in Somerville, Mass, Bruce, Henry Goodnow, historian, author. He is a historical writer. He is the author of James Edward Oglethorpe and the Founding of the Georgia Colony; and Samuel Houston and the Annexation of Texas.
Bruce, Horatio Washington, lawyer, legiswas born Feb. 33, 1830, in Lewis county, Ky. He was a member of the Kentucky state legislature; and was a member of the confederate congress. He has been circuit judge in Kentucky; and was chancellor of the Louisville chancery court. He is now chief attorney of the Louisville and Nashville railroad company at Louisville, Ky. lator, jurist,
Bruce, John, soldier, planter, jurist, was born Feb. 16, 1833, in Scotland. He entered the union army and served throughout the civil war, rising to the rank of colonel and
brevet brigadier-general. He settled in^Alabama as a cotton planter; and was a representative in the state legislature in 1873 and 1874. In 1875-1901 he was United States district judge for the district of Alabama. He died Oct. 1, 1901, at Walter's Park, Pa. Bruce,

Bruce, Philip Alexander, historian, author, 7, 1856, in Charlotte county, Va. In 1876 he graduated from the university of Virginia; and in 1879 graduated from Harvard university with the degree of LL.B. For many years he was corresponding secretary of the Virginia historical society. He is the author of The Plantation Negro as a Freeman; Economic History of Virginia in the Seventeenth Century and Short History of the United States.
