Brush, Daniel Harmon, soldier, lawyer, banker, founder, was born April 25, 1813, in Vergennes, Vt. He founded the town of Carbondale, 111.; and engaged in banking in that town. He entered the civil war in 1861; and attained the rank of brigadier-general of volunteers. After the civil war he practiced law in Carbondale, 111. Brush, Edmund A., capitalist, was bom in Having January, 1803, in Detroit, Mich. gained a moderate amount of capital in business pursuits, he bought, in the early days of Detroit, a strip of land which is now covered by the choicest residences in town. The property descended to his son, Alfred B. Brush. He died July 10, 1877, in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1874-78 he practiced medicine and surgery in Buflalo, N.Y.; and in 1874-79 was also editor of the Buffalo Medical Journal. In 1878-84 he was assistant physician in the T^ew York state lunatic asylum at Utica; and in 1884-91 was assistant physician in the Pennsylvania hospital for the insane at Philadelphia, Pa. In 1874-84 and since 1897 he has been associate editor of the American Journal of Insanity. Since 1891 he has been physician-in-chief and medical superintendent of the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt hospital of Baltimore, Md. Brush, George Dfe Forest, painter, artist, was born Sept. 38, 1855, in Shelbyville, Tenn. His principal works are The Artist; Child. He is an associate of the national academy. In 1872-78 he was pastor of the congregational church at Charlotte, Mich.; and in 1878-91 was pastor of the first presbyterian church of Saginaw, Mich. He is the author of Studies in the Manufacture of Vegetable Glycerine; and Microscopical Researches of Blood iff Diagnosis.
