Butler, Marion, journalist, United States senator, was born May 20, 1863, in Sampson county, N.C. He was elected to the North Carolina state senate in 1890. He was president of the state farmers' alliance in 189193; was elected vicepresident of the national farmers' alliance and industrial

1893;

and

was

elected president of that organization in 1894. His paper, the Caucasian, of Raleigh,

N.C, has probably the largest circulation and is one of the most influential papers in the state. In 1895-1901 he was United States senator.

born May 1, 1864, in Edgefield, S.C. He was educated at Union college and at West Point military academy. During the Spanish-American war he held the volunteer rank of major on the staffs of Generals M. C. Butler, Young, Brooke and Wood. Since 1903 he has been on duty at West Point military academy as instructor in riding. He was on duty during the World's Fair at St. Louis with the Philippine exhibit. Butler, Matthew Calbraithe, soldier, lawyer. United States senator, was born March 8, 1836, near Greenville, S.C. He was elected to the state legislature of South Carolina in 1860. He entered the confederate service as captain of cavalry in the Hampton legion in 1861; became major-general through the regular grades; and lost his right leg at the battle of Brandy station in 1863. He was elected to the legislature of South Carolina in 1866 was a candidate for lieutenant-governor of South Carolina in 1870; and received the democratic vote of the South Carolina legislature for United States senator in 1870. In 1877-95 he was a United States senator. In 1898 he was appointed majorgeneral United States volunteers for service in the Cuban war.

Butler, Moses, soldier, surveyor, legislator, 13, 1702, in Berwick, Maine. In 1733-56 he was annually elected selectman of Berwick and surveyor of land. In 1749 he was elected a representative to the general court. He died in 1756.

Maine. He is the author of Bellum Helveticum, a latin text-book. Butler, Nicholas Murray, educator, college president, author, was born April 3, 1863, in Elizabeth, N.J. cation. Butler, Noble, educator, author, was born in 1819 in Washington county, Pa. He was a classical professor in the university of Practical Louisville. He was the author of and Critical English Grammar and other valuable text books. He died Feb. 12, 1882, in Louisville, Ky. Butler, Percival, soldier, congressman, was bom in 1760, in Pennsylvania. He rose to the rank of captain in the revolutionary war; and served as adjutant-general in the war of 1813. In 1817 he resigned from the army; and in that year was elected to the legislature and served three terms. States senator, was born July 11, 1744, in Ireland. In 1778 he was a delegate from Carolina to the old congress; and in 1787-88 was a member of the convention which framed the constitution of the United States, and signed the same. In 1789-97 and 1802-04 he was United States senator. He died Feb. 15, 1832, in Philadelphia, Pa. Butler, Pierce Mason, soldier, banker, governor, was born April 11, 1798, in Edgefield, S.C. He became first lieutenant in 1823; and attained the grade of captain in 1835. After four years of service he resigned his commission; and became a president of a bank at Columbia, S.C. In 1836-38 he was ihe

twenty-second governor of South Carolina. He was killed in battle Aug. 20, 1847, in Churubusco, Mexico.
