Capps, Washington Lee, soldier, was born Jan. 31, 1864, in Portsmouth, Va. In 1880 he was cadet engineer in the navy ; and was promoted several times until he attained the rank of rear-admiral in 1907. Capron, Adin Ballou, soldier, congressman, was born Jan. 9, 1841, in Mendon, Mass. He enlisted as sergeant in the second regiment
Rhode Island infantry in 1861; and was promoted to sergeantmajor and lieutenant.
He
served in the signal corps until the close of the civil war,
having been commissioned first lieutenant in the signal corps of United States army in 1863; and he received promotion to the rank of captain and major by brevet. He served as a representative of the general assembly of Rhode Island in 1888-92; and was speaker in 1891-92. In 1897-1911 he was a representative from Rhode Island to the fifty-fifth, fifty-sixth,
the strongly intrenched convent used as a citadel; and during this engagement, for bravery in which he was three times brevetted, he fell mortally wounded. Fort Capron, Fla., was named after him for his services in the Seminole war. He died Aug. 30, 1847, in
Mexico.
Capron, Horace, soldier, agriculturist, was born in New York. He served in the army during the civil war; and became a brigadier-general. In 1868 he was appointed commissioner of agriculture; and in 1871-75 was invited by the Japanese government to take charge of certain agricultural experiments and improvements in Japan, where he re-
mained four years. He died Feb.

Capron, Albert Judson, business manager, statesman, was born June 31, 1858, in Conneaut, Ohio. He was educated in the public schools; and at the Conneaut academy of Ohio. He has been manager of the Standard oil company; manager of life insurance company; special agent and adjuster of life insurance company; and president of several societies. He is a representative in the Ore-
gon state legislature; chairman of the committee on military affairs and a member of the committe on mining. He is now a manu;
facturer's agent of building materials at Portland, Ore. Since 1905 he has been a representative in the Oregon state legislature. Caxnron, Allyn, soldier, was born Aug. 37, 1846, in Tampa, Fla. He graduated from the United States military academy; and in 1888 attained the rank of captain. In 1898 he served in the Spanish-American war. He died Sept. 18, 1893, in Fort Myer, Va.
Capron, Allyn Kissam, soldier, was born June 34, 1871, in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1890 he enlisted as a private soldier In the fourth cavalry; was appointed second lieutenant of infantry in 1893; joined Theodore Roosevelt's rough riders as captain in 1898; and was killed in battle Jan. 34, 1898, near Santiago, Cuba. Capron, Erastus Allyn, soldier, was born in 1813, in Macedon, N.Y. During the Mexican war as captain at the battle of Churubusco he led his company in the storming of

Carberry, William Henry, inventor, statesman, was born Feb. '22, 1851, in Roxbury, Mass. In 1880 he began business for himself in the line of iron-moulding, in which he was successful. In 1877 he was elected a representative in the Massachusetts state legislature; and was a member of the state
opera in Paris, London, Saint Petersburg, Lisbon and other cities. In 1881-83 he
was
engaged

Strakosh's Italian opera company in the United States ; and later was with the Abbey and Grau grand opera companies during several seasons in is a noted singer of New York now engaged principally as a •

Card, Benjamin Cozzens, soldier, was born Feb. 15, 1825, in Rhode Island. He served throughout the civil war as assistant quartermaster; and in 1883 became lieutenantcolonel and deputy quartermaster-general in the United States army. In 1889 he was retired as brigadier-general.
Cardozo, Isaac N., journalist, author, was
born June 17, 1786, in Savannah, Ga. He became editor of the Southern Patriot in Charleston in 1816, and its sole proprietor in 1823. He sold his paper in 1845; and established the Evening News.
