City. Carleton, Ezra C, merchant, congressman, was born Sept. 6, 1838, in Port Huron, Mich.
He was a hardware merchant; and in 1881 was mayor of Port Huron, Mich. In 188387 he was a representative from Michigan to the forty-eighth and forty-ninth congresses as a democrat. Carleton, Henry, soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born in 1785 in Virginia. He served as a lieutenant of infantry under General Jackson in the campaign that terminated in 1815. In connection with Mr. L. Moreau, he translated those portions of Las Siete Partidas, a celebrated Spanish code of laws, that were observed in Louisiana. He became United States district attorney for the eastern district of Louisiana in 1832; and was subsequently appointed a judge of the supreme court of the same state. He was the author of Liberty and Necessity. He died March 28, 1863, in Philadelphia, Pa. Carleton, Henry Guy, soldier, journalist, dramatist, poet, was born June 21, 1855, in New Mexico. He is best known as a writer of plays, among which are Memnon; The
Pembertons
and Victor Durand.
Carleton, James Henry, soldier, was born in 1814, in Maine. He was a, lieutenant of
Maine volunteers during what was known as the Aroostook war. In 1862 he was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers; and in 1865 was raised by brevet through all ranks up to brigadier-general in the regular army for his services in New Mexico; and
brevetted major-general United States army for his services during the civil war. He died Jan. 7, 1873, in San Antonio, Texas. Carleton, Mark Alfred, botanist, agronomist, author, was born March 7, 1866, in Jerusalem, Ohio. Since 1894 he has been cerealist in the United States department of Agriculture. He is the author of several publications on Durum wheats and other grains. He established the Durum wheat industry in America, which, after ten years, has already a farm value of fifty million dollars annually. Carleton, Murray, merchant, director. He was a director of the Louisana purchase exposition company; and was president of the Carleton dry goods company. In 1904 he served as a member of the executive committee.
Carleton, Osgood, mathematician, author, in 1742. He was a Massachusetts mathematician. He was the author of American Navigator; South American Pilot; and Practice of Arithmetic. He died in June, 1816, in Litchfield, N.H.

ber of the Virginia state senate in 1847-51; and in 1850 was a member of the constitutional convention of Virginia. In 1855-57 and 1861-63 he was a representative from Virginia to the thirty-fourth and thirty-seventh congresses. In 1861-65 he was United States senator. He died Oct. 24, 1878, in Clarksburg, W.Va. Carlin, Charles Creighton, lawyer, congressman, was born April 8, 1866, in Alexandria, Va. He graduated from the national law university; and was postmaster of Alexandria for four years. In 1904 he was a presidential elector. In 1907-09 he was a representative from Virginia to the sixtieth congress to fill a vacancy; and was reelected to the sixty-first congress. Carlin, William Passmore, soldier, was born Nov. 24, 1829, in Rich Woods, 111. He participated in the march to the sea and through the Carolinas; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general for services at Bentonville; and H(ajor-general for services during the civil war. In 1867-68 he was assistant commissioner of the freedmen's bureau in Tennessee. He was subsequently placed on the retired list; and resided in Spokane, Wash. He died Oct. 4, 1903, in Livingston, Mont.
