Carr, Elias, farmer, soldier, governor, was born Feb. 25, 1839, in Edgecombe county, N. 0. With the exception of the time spent in
the confederate army,

his life has
been preeminently that of the agriculturist.
He was
the first county president of the farmers'
and for two was president
alliance;
terms
of the state alliance. In 1886 he was a delegate from North Carolina to the farmers' national convention at St. Paul; and in 1893 was appointed commissioner to the World's fair. In 1893-97 he was the thirty -seventh governor of North Carolina. He died July 23, 1900, in Old Sparta, N.C. Carr, Eugene Asa, soldier, was born March 20, 1830, in New York City. In 1850 he graduated from West Point. In 1858 he was second and first lieutenant and captain in the first and fourth United States cavalry; in 1862 became major of the fifth cavalry; and the same year was promoted to brigadier-general of volunteers for distinguished service in the battle of Pea Ridge. In 1873 he became lieutenant-colonel in the fifth cavalry; in 1879 became colonel iln the sixth cavalry; in 1892 was promoted to brigadiergeneral; and was retired in 1893. He has held thirty-eight commands; participated in thirty-seven battles; and been wounded four times. He also served in the Spanish-American war. '
Carr, Ezra Slocum, educator, author, was born March 19, 1819. He was called to the chair of chemistry and natural philosophy at the university of Wisconsin in 1856, where he was appointed a regent of that institution by the legislature, and one of the state

Carr, Francis, congressman, was born ir 1752. He was a member of the Massachusetts state legislature in 1806-11; and in 1811-13 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the twelfth congress. He died in October 1821, in Massachusetts. Carr, Henry James, lawyer, librarian, was born Aug. 16, 1849, in Pembroke, N.H. In 1879 he was admitted to the bar but never entered into regular practice. In 1890 he organized the public library of Grand Rapids, Mich. Since 1901 he has been librarian oi the public library of Scranton, Pa. Carr, James, congressman. He served three years in the Massachusetts state legislature from Bangor. In 1815-17 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the fourteenth congress. He died in Bangor, Maine. In Carr, John, congressman, statesman. 1831-37 and 1839-41 he was a representative from Indiana to the twenty-second, twenty -third, twenty-fourth and twenty sixth congresses. He died Jan. 20, 1845, in Clark county, Ind.
Carr, Joseph Bradford, soldier, was born 16, 1826, in Albany, N.Y. When the civil war broke out he was made lieutenantcolonel and then colonel of the second regiment New York volunteers. In 1865 he was brevetted major-general; and in 1893 appointed major-general. He was secretary of the state of New York in 1879-85. He died Feb. 24, 1895, in Troy, N.Y.

Carr, Joseph Middleton, clergyman, was born March 9, 1836, in Damascus, Ohio. Since 1880 he has been a member of the East Ohio conference of the methodist episcopal church. He secured one hundred thousand dollars for the Mount Union college, together with very valuable grounds and the president's residence. He was a member of the general conference in 1880; and chairman of the East Ohio delegation, and member of the general missionary committee of the fourth general coixference district; is a trustee of Mount Union college and president of the board oi trustees of the East Ohio annual conference He is now pastor of the Miles Park avenue church of Cleveland, Ohio.
