was born in 1794, in Maryland. He was a member of the Maryland assembly in 1836 j
and a state senator in 1837. In 1843-47 he was a representative from New York to the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth congresses. He died in 1865 in Uroveland, N.Y. Carroll, Daniel, congressman, was born in Maryland. In 1780-84 he was a delegate from Maryland to the continental congress; and signed the articles of confederation and also the constitution. In 1789-91 he was a representative from Maryland to the first congress. He died in 1839 in Washington, D.C. Carroll, David L., clergyman, college president, author, was 10, 1787, in Fayette county. Pa. In 1839 he became pastor of the first presbyterian church of Brooklyn; and in 1835 was elected the ninth president of Hampden-Sidney college. He was

In 1850 he was elected to the Arkansas state legislature; and in 1860 was elected prosecuting attorney. In 1861-63 he served in the civil war; and attained the rank of colonel. In 1864 he was elected to the lower house of the confederate congress in 1866 was elected judge of Jefferson county; and in 1878 was elected chancellor of Pulaski chancery court at Little Rock, Ark. Carroll, George W., lumberman, donor, was born April 11, 1855, in Mansfield, La. He has interests in lumber and oil companies. In 1904 was a candidate for the vice-presidency of the United States. He has given seventyfive thousand dollars to the Baylor university at Waco, Texas; and he donated large sums to other baptist institutions. Carroll, Harry W., accountant, legislator, comptroller, was born Sept. 4, 1858, in Sacramento, Cal. He was educated at the university of California. By profession he is a certified public accountant. For many years he was in the employ of the Southern pacific company freight and passenger service; with the Oregon improvement company as steamship purser; and bookkeeper in the state auditor's ofiiee, state of Washington. He was a representative in the twenty-seventh session of the California state legislature; has been chairman of the state board of accountancy for the state of Washington; and has filled various other positions of trust and honor. He is now city comptroller for the city of Seattle, Wash. Carroll,

1838, in New York City. He served throughout the civil war; and in 1866 was promoted to first lieutenant. In 1899 he was retired with the rank of brigadier-general United States army. bacteriologist, scientist, 1854, in England. He was educated at the Albion house academy of Woolwich, England; in 1891 graduated from the medical department of the university of Maryland; and took post-graduate courses in pathology and bacteriology at the Johns Hopkins hospital. In 1897-1903 he was a member of the United States army yellow fever commission; voluntarily submitted to the bite of a contaminated mosquito, and within four days suffered a severe attack of yellow fever, being the first case of experimental yellow fever on record. In 1903 he became professor of bacteriology and clinical microscopy at the army medical school; curator of the army medical museum; and in charge of bacteriology and pathological laboratories.

In 1879 he was clerk of the grand jury of New York City; has been clerk of the seventh district civil court; and in 1891-98 was clerk of the court of Oyer terminer and grand sessions. He was a Tammany leader; and a member of the executive committee of Tammany hall. He is now vicepresident of the Fourteenth street bank of

assistant at the cathedral of the
holy name; and by his zeal and proficiency was soon made pastor of St. Thomas parish of Chicago. He is also a noted renowned Gaelic scholar.
