He was 1854, in Scioto county, Ohio. engaged in farming, railroading, and school teaching for a number of years; studied

law and was admitted to the bar. In 1882 he removed from Burlington, Iowa, to Helena,
Montana; and
in
1889-91 he was a representative from Montana to the fifty-first congress as a republican; and upon the admission of the state was elected its first representative in congress. He was commissioner of the general land office in 1891-92; and in 1895-1901 and 1905-11 he was United States senator. In 1896 and 1900 he was a delegate to the republican national convention.

Walter Steuben, lawyer, donor, 24, 1833, in Barkhamsted, Conn. He began the practice of law in 1855; practiced in Chicago in 1869-72; and since that time has practiced in New York City. He donated an organ to the methodist Carter,

died Feb. 9, 1893, in Philadelphia, Pa. Cartter, David Kellogg, lawyer, jurist, diplomat, congressman, was born June 23, 1813, in Rochester, N.Y. He began the practice of law in Masillon, Ohio. In 1849-53 he was a member of the thirty-first and thirty-second congresses from Ohio. In 1861-62 he was minister to Bolivia; and in 1863 he became chief justice of the supreme court of the District of Columbia. He died April 16, 1887, in Washington, D.C.
Cartwright, James Henry, lawyer, jurist, 1, 1842, in Maquoketa, Iowa. He practiced law at Oregon, 111. was circuit judge in 1888-95; and since 1888 has been judge of the state supreme court of Illinois for the sixth district. Cartwright, Peter, clergyman, author, was born Sept. 1, 1785, in Amherst county, Va. He was a famous methodist preacher of Illinois. In 1846 he was a candidate for congress against Abraham Lincoln. Carter, William B., state senator, congressman, was born in 1812 in Tennessee. He was a member of the house and state sen-
ate in the state legislature; and president of the constitutional convention. In 1835-41 he was a representative from Tennessee to the twenty-fourth, twenty fifth and the twentysixth congresses. He died April 17, 1848, in Carter county, Tenn. Carter, William Francis, educator, author, Sept. 5, 1830, in Northborough, Mass. He was a professor of ancient languages and latin in the university of WisconTactisin. He was the author of Annals of tus; and Short History of the Roman People. He died Dec. 9, 1889, in Madison, Wis. Carter, William Harding, soldier, author, was born about 1848 in Nashville, Tenn. In 1873-97 he served on the frontier; and since 1897 has been in the war department. He received the medal for honor for distinguished bravery in action against the Apache Indians at Cibicu Creek in 1881. He is the author of Horses, Saddles and Bridles; and Historical Sketch of the Sixth United States Cavalry.

Pleasant Plains, 111. Cartwright, Samuel Adolphus, physician, was born Nov. 30, 1793, in Fairfax county, Va. He practiced for more than a quarter of a century in Natchez, Miss.; and served at one time under General Jackson as surgeon. He removed to New Orleans in 1848; and in 1862 was appointed to improve the sanitary condition of the confederate soldiers near Port Hudson and Vioksburg. He died May 2, 1863, in Jackson, Miss. Cartwright, Samuel Gray, was born June June 11, 1869, in Kossuth, Des Moines county, Iowa. In 1893 he graduated with the degree of Ph.B. from the state university of Iowa; took a six months' course in Elliott's business college of Burlington, Iowa; and a year's course in the law school of the state university of Iowa. For two terms he was city treasurer of Santa Fe, N.M.; and was a member of the oapitol rebuilding board of New Mexico which rebuilt the capltol. He is secretary and treasurer of the wholesale grocery firm of H. B. Cartwright and brother of Santa Pe, N.M. He is a trustee and secretary-treasurer of the asylum for the deaf and dumb of New Mexico.
