Chamberlin, Johiel Weston, physician, ophthalmologist, oculist, aurist, was born Oct. 28, 1857, in Rock Falls, Wis. He was educated at the Galesburg university; at Brush medical college; and attended universities in London, Paris and Vienna. He is a noted oculist and aurist of St. Paul, Minn.; has been chief ophthalmic surgeon to various railway companies and hospitals. He is past grand commander knights templars of Minnesota; past lieutenant-governor society of colonial wars; and a member of the leading patriotic, medical and scientifie associations and societies of America. Chamberlin, Joseph Edgar, journalist, author, was born Aug. 6, 1851, in Newbury, Vt. He has been newspaper editor and magazine writer since 1870; and is now on the staffs of the Transcript and the Youth's Companion. He is the author of The Listener in the Town The Listener in the Country Biography of John Brown; and other works. Chamberlin, Joshua Lawrence, soldier, educator, college president, governor, was born Sept. 8, 1828, in Bangor, Maine. He was professor of Bowdoin college in 1855-63. In 1863 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the twentieth Maine infantry; and was brevetHis command received ted major-general. the formal surrender of the arms and colors of Lee's army. He resumed his professorship of modern languages in 1865; and in 1871 was elected president of Bowdoin college. He was governor of Maine in 1866-70. Chamberlin, Paul Mellen, civil engineer, author, was bora on Feb. 38, 1865, in Three Oaks, Mich. He is a consulting engineer of Chicago, 111. He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science. He is the author of Notes on Mechanical Drawing; Introductory to Machine Design.

author, was born Sept. 31, 1843, near Mattoon, 111. In 1876 he was chief geologist of Wisconsin; was president university of Wisconsin in 1887-93; and since 1896 has been president of the Chicago academy of sciences. Since 1893 he has been professor and head of the department of geology in the university of Chicago. He is the author of Outline of a Course of Oral Instruction ; and Geology of Wisconsin.

Chamberlin, William Henry, soldier, journalist, author, was born Oct. 19, 1833, in Ross county, Ohio. He served in the civil war as major of the eighty-first regiment volunteer infantry in 1861-65. In 1895-98 he was recorder of commandery state of Ohio, military order of the loyal legion of the United States. He was also agent of the associated press. He is the author of History of the Eighty-first Ohio.

Chambers, Alexander, soldier, was born about 1832 in New York. He served in the Tennessee and Mississippi campaign in 1862, having been twice wounded in the battle of Shiloh; and was promoted brevet major. He was a brigadier-general of volunteers in 1863. He was at Omaha as judge advocate of the district of Nebraska in 1866. He became major of the twenty-second infantry in 1867.
Chambers, David, journalist, congressman, author, was born March 17, 1780, in Allentown, Pa. He was elected state printer when the seat of government was removed to Columbus and was appointed secretary of the senate. In 1813-13 he was aid-de-camp to General Cass. In 1821-33 he was a representative from Ohio to the seventeenth congress. He subsequently served a number of years in the state legislature of Ohio; was speaker in 1844; was a member of the constitutional convention of 1851; and was also elected mayor of Zanesville. He died Aug. 8, 1864, in Zanesville, Ohio.
Chambers, Ezekiel F., soldier, jurist. United States senator, was born Feb. 38, 1788, in Kent county, Md. In 1836-34 he was United States senator from Maryland. In 1834 he was appointed chief judge of the second judicial district; and a judge of the court of appeals, which offices he held unitl 1851. In 1864 he was the democratic candidate for governor of Maryland. He died Jan. 30, 1867, in Chestertown, Md. Chambers, George, lawyer, congressman, was born Feb. 24, 1786, in Chambersburg, Pa. In 1833-37 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the twenty-third and twenty-fourth congresses; was then elected a delegate to the Pennsylvania constitutional convention; and in 1851 was an associate justice of the supreme court of the state. He died March 25, 1866, in Chambersburg, Pa. Chambers, Henry, United States senator, was born in 1785. In 1835-36 he was United States senator from Alabama. He died Jan. 25, 1836, in Mecklenburg county, Va.
