house of representatives and he served as its speaker during the last two years. In 1865 he became the solicitor and judge advocate general of the navy department; and was subse;

assistant secretary of the treasury. In 1881

he was again a member of the New Hampshire state legislature; and in 1882-85 was secretary of the navy. In 1887-1901 he was United States senator. He resides in Concord, N.H.; and his portrait hangs in the Library building of the state capitol.

Chandler, William Henry, chemist, was born Dec. 13, 1841, in New Bedford, Mass. In 1871 he became professor of chemistry at Lehigh university; and in 1878 was made director of the library. In 1876 he was a juror at the Philadelphia centennial exhibition; and in 1878 was a juror at the Paris exhibition. His contributions to chemical literature have appeared principally in the American Chemist, of which he and his brother, Charles F. Chandler, were editors in 1870-77. Chandler, Zachariah, United States senator, was bom Dec. 10, 1813, in Bedford, N.H. He was mayor of Detroit in 1851; and in 1857-75 and 1879-81 was a United States senator from Michigan. He was a delegate to the Philadelphia loyalists convention of 1866. In 1875-77 he was secretary of the interior. He died Nov. 1, 1879, in Chicago, HI. Chaney, George Leonard, clergyman, author, was born in 1836 in IVfessachusetts. He is a unitarian clergyman and pastor of Atlanta, Ga.; and edited the Southern Unitarian in 1893-96. He was the founder of the Church of our father in Atlanta, Ga. He is the author of F. Grant and Co., a story for boys; Tom, a. Home Story; Aloha, travels in the Sandwich Islands; Every Day Life

and Every Day Morals; and

Belief.

Chaney, John, congressman, was bom in 1801 in Maryland. In 1833-39 he was a representative from Ohio to the twenty-third, twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth congresses.

He

died in Ohio.

Chaney, John C, lawyer, congressman, was born Feb. 1, 1854, in Columbiana county, Ohio. Since 1883 he has been engaged in the practice of law in Sullivan, Ind. In 1889-93 he was an assistant to the United States attorney general. In 1905-09 he was a repre38

Wayne and

Sullivan, Ind.; and at the Cincinnati university of Ohio. Tn 1905-09 he was a representative from Indiana to the fifty-ninth and sixtieth congresses. Chaney, Lucien West, educator, biologist, author, was born June 26, 1857, in Hamilton, N.Y. Since 1883 he has been professor of biology in Carleton college of Minnesota. He is the author of Guides for the Laboratory. Chanfrau, Mrs. F. S., actress, was bora in 1837 in Philadelphia, Pa. She has appeared in leading dramas in the principal cities of the UnitgJ States. Chanfrau, Frank S., actor, was born Feb. 22, 1824, in New York City. He appeared as Kit, in the Arkansas Traveler, in Buffalo in 1869; achieved the most enduring success of his professional career; and in this character he appeared continuously for thirteen years. He died Oct. 2, 1884, in Jersey City, N.J.

Chanfrau, Henrietta Baker, actress, was in 1837 in Philadelphia, Pa. Her first appearance on the boards of a regular theatre was at the city museum in her native place in 1854 as Miss Apsley in The Willow Copse. She married Mr. Chanfrau in 1858. Chanler, Mrs. Amelie Rives, author, poet, was born Aug. 23, 1863, in Richmond, Va. In 1888 she published her first novel, entitled The Quick or the Dead; and, in 1891 published According to St. John. She is the author of several poems, the most notable of

Chanler, William Ast|Or, soldier, explorer, congressman, author, was born on June 11, 1867, in Newport, R.I. He was elected to the New York state legislature in 1897. In 18991901 he was a representative from New York to the fifty-sixth congress as a democrat. He went to the front in the Spanish war; took part in the battle and siege of Santiago; and received special commendation from General Shafter. He is the author of Through Jungle and Deserts ; and Travels in 1859-60;

Eastern Africa. Channing, Blanche Mary, author, poet, was born in 1863 in England. She came to the United States in 1890; and resided in BrookShe was a writer for young lyn, Mass. people. She was the author of Zodiac Stories Winifred West; The Balaster Boys; and Lullaby Castle and Other Poems. She died in 1902 in Brooklyn, Mass. in
