Church, Pharcellus, clergyman, journalist, author, was born Aug. 11, 1801, in Seneca, N. Y. He edited the New York Chronicle in 1854-65; and continued to the end of his life a proprietor of the Examiner, with which that paper was consolidated. He was the author of i'liilosophy of Benevolence; Religious Dissensions, their Cause and Cure; Antioch, or Increase of Moral Power in the Church; Mapleton, or More Work for the Maine Law; Seed-Truths; and Theodosia. He died June 1S86, in Tarrytown, N.Y. Church, Samuel Harden, railroad manager, author, was born Jan. 34, 1858, in Caldwell county. Mo. He was superintendent of transportation, then became secretary of the Pennsylvania lines west of Pittsburg. He is an eminent historian; secretary and trustee of the Carnegie institute; and vice-president of the Union steel casting company. He is the author of Oliver Cromwell, a History; John Marmaduke Corporate History of the Pennsylvania Railroad Lines West of Pittsburg, In ten volumes; Penniddocks of the White Lambs; and several plays. Church, Samuel Porter, physician, surgeon, was born in 1821 in Salisbury, Conn. For over forty years he practiced medicine and surgery, retiring from business in 1890. He practiced ten years in Connecticut; and the last thirty years of his practice was spent at
fifteen years he was consulting physician of St. Luke's hospital. He is a son of the late Chief Justice Church. He now lives with his son. Professor Irving

Church, Sanford Elias, lawyer, jurist, lieutenant-governor, was born April 18, 1815, in Milford, N.Y. In 1842 he was a member of the New York state assembly; was district attorney for his county in 1846-47; lieutenant-governor in 1851-55; comptroller of the state in 1858-59; and a member of the state constitutional convention of 1867. He died May 14, 1880, in Albion, N.Y.
Church, William Conant, soldier, journalauthor, was born Aug. 11, 1836, in Rochester, N.Y. During the civil war he served as captain and brevet lieutenant-colonel of the United States volunteers. He is now the editor of the Army and Navy Journal of New lork City. He is the author of Life of John Ericsson; and Life of Ulysses S. Grant. Church, William E., soldier, lawyer, jurist, was born Deo. 7, 1841, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He enlisted in the union army in 1862; and was promoted to the rank of captain and assistant adjutant-general, in 1883 he was appointed an associate justice of the supreme court of Dakota territory. Northampton, Mass. Churchill, George Bosworth, educator, author, was born Oct. 24, 1866, in Worcester, Mass. In 1898-1903 he was associate professor, of English and public speaking; in 1903 he was associate professor of English literature; and since 1903 professor of English He is the literature of Amherst college. joint-author of Descriptive Catalogue of the Latin University Plays of England in the Time of Elizabeth; and author of Richard III up to Shakespeare. Churchill, John Charles, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Jan. 17, 1821, in Mooers, N.Y. In 1857-59 he was the district attorney for Oswego county ; and was county judge of the same county in 1860-63. In 1867-71 he was a representative from New
York
to the fortieth and forty-first congresses. In 1891-92 he was justice of the supreme court of York. He died in 1905 in Oswego, N.Y".

Andover, Mass. Churchill, Joseph Richmond, lawyer, botanist, was born July 29, 1845, in Dorchester, Mass. In 1867 he erraduated from Harvard; and in 1869 graduated from Harvard law school. Since 1869 he has practiced law in Dorchester and Boston, Mass.; and since 1870 has been justice of the municipal court of Dorchester. He prepared List of Plants Growing Naturally in Milton for History of Town of Milton, Mass.
