Alexander, William Cowper, lawyer, Insurance president, statesman, was born in 1806 in Virginia. For several years he was president of the New Jersey state senate. He was nominated for governor, and lacked but a few votes of election; was a member of the peace congress of 1861, and was president of the .Equitable life insurance company in 1859-74. He died Aug.- 23, 1874, in

New York

City.

Alexander, William DeWitt, civil engineer, surveyor, author, was born April 2, 1833, In 1855 he graduated in Honolulu, Hawaii. from Yale university

from which institution he received the degrees of A.M. and LLD. In 1856 he was a tutor in Beloit college of Wisconsin; and in 1857 taught in the academy at Vincennes, Ind. He

became

professor

of

Greek at Oahu college; and in 1864-71 was president of that institution of learning. In 1887-1905 he was a member of the board of education of Honolulu; and since 1872 has been surveyor-general of the Hawaiian Brief History Islands. He is the author of of the Hawaiian People; History of the Later Years of the Hawaiian Monarchy; Brief Hawaiian Grammar; and Introduction to Andrews' Hawaiian Dictionary. Alexander, William Gay, general manager, financier, was born Feb. 25, 1867, in St. Louis, Mo. He was educated in the public schools; and graduated from the university of the Pacific. He has been state president of the California christian endeavor union. He was a member of the board of freeholders who framed the charter of the city of San Jose, Cal.; and secretary of the Garden city bank and trust company. He has been president of the Campbell fruit growers' unioji; and is now manager of the Sperry

company.

Alexander, William H., manufacturer, was born Nov. 24, 1836, in Tunbridge, Vt. He received an academic education; and in 1856-95 was with the Concord and Montreal railroad, the last thirteen years being its purchasing agent. Since 1895 he has been manager of the Beecher Falls company, a large furniture manufacturing concern of Beecher Falls, Vt. His ancestor, Randyl Alexander, came from the north of Ireland in 1719, and was among the first sixteen settlers of Nutfleld, now Londonderry, N.H.;

Alexander,

William Henry, educator, was born Jan. 10, 1867, in Hopkins county, Texas. He was educated in the scientist,

common schools of his native state; and graduated from the university of Virginia and from Columbia university. He has been professor of mathematics in the baptist college of Decatur, Texas; and professor of science in Henry college of Campbell, Texas. He is now observer in the United States weather bureau at Galveston, Texas; and" has served four years in that capacity in the West Indies, St. Kitts and Porto Rico. He is the author of Hurricanes. Alexander, William Leidy, soldier, was born Sept. 9, 1843 in Iowa. In 1863 he became captain of the thirtieth regiment Iowa infantry. In 1889 he became captain in the United States army; was made colonel in 1898; and in 1905 attained the rank of brigadier-general and

retired.

Aley, Robert Judson, educator, lecturer, author, was born May 11, 1863, in Coal City, Ind. In 1879-82 he attended Valparaiso college and graduated from the teachers' course; in 1888 he received the degree of A.B, from Ijndiana university, received the degree of A.M. two years later from the

same

institution;

and

subsequently received the degree of Ph.D. from the university of Pennsylvania. In 187781 he taught in country schools; and in 1883-85 and 1886-87 was principal of the high school at Spencer, Ind. In 1887-88 he was instructor in mathematics at the Indiana university; in 1888-91 was professor of mathematics at Vincennes university; and since 1891 has been professor of mathematics in the Indiana univerHe is the author of sity at Bloomington. The Geometry of the Triangle Graphs; The Essentials of Algebra; and Supplementary Problems in Algebra. Alford, Julius C, congressman, was born in Georgia. In 1835-37 he was a representative from Georgia to fill a vacancy; and also served in 1841-43 as a representative from Georgia to the twenty-seventh congress. He died in Troup county, Ga. Alford, Thomas Greene, educator, mathematician, scientist, was born March 26, Since 1892 he 1852, in Alfordsville, Ind. has been professor of mathematics at Purdue university. He has made a special study of the theory of high school education and sociology. Alford,
