Henry D., educator, lawyer, congressman, was born June 24, 1854, in Henderson county, Ky. He taught in public schools until 1875 graduated from Missouri medical college in 1877; and was licensed to practice law in 1878. He was county attorney for nine years. In 1889-1903 he was a representative from Kentucky to the fifty-sixth and fifty-seventh congresses as a democrat. Allen, Henry Francis, physician, surgeon, author, was born June 23, 1837, in Wales. He has attained success as a noted physician and surgeon of St. Louis, Mo. He has written and lectured on economic subjects; and in' 1872 he addressed the international society of St. Louis on the Need of Reform, which was a clear forecast of the trust domination now obtaining. He is the author of The Key of Industrial Co-operative Government; and a Strange ^'oyage. Allen, Henry Tureman, soldier, governor, author, was born April 13, 1859, in Sharpsburg, Ky. He attended Georgetown college

Kentucky; and
in
1882 graduated from the United States military academy. He has been a cavalry officer; in 1885-86 was engaged in explorations in Alaska; 1881-90 was instructor in languages at the military academy; and in 1890-99 was military attache in St. Petersburg and Berlin, except while serving in the Cuban campaign. In 1901 he commanded the forty-third regiment United States volunteer infantry on the island of Leyte, of which island he was civil governor. In 1901 he began the organization of the Philippine constabulary; and in 1903 was

at Shiloh and at Baton Rouge; and was appointed brigadier-general. In 1864 he was inaugurated governor of Louisiana. He died April 22, 1866, in the city of Mexico. Allen, Herman, soldier, was born Oct. 15, 1740, in Cornwall, Conn.; and was a brother of Ethan Allen. He was a member of the convention of 1776, and its agent to present its petition to represent the situation of the New Hampshire grants to the constitutional congress. He was a member of two other conventions the same year. In 1775 he serv-
ed with Warner in the Canadian expedition as a colonel; and in 1877 was appointed a member of the 'state council of safety. He died May 18, 1778, in "Vermont. Allen, Horace Newton, medical missionary, diplomat, author, was born April 23, 1858, in Delaware, Ohio. He graduated from the Ohio Wesleyan university; and received the degree of M.D. from the Miami medical college. For several years he was medical missionary of the presbyterian church in China; and in 1884 went to Korea. He saved the life of a prince and others in a. revolution became medical officer to the Korean court; and in 1888 took the first Korean legation to Washington, D.C. In 1890 he returned to Korea as secretary of the United States minister to Korea at Seoul. He is the author of Korean Tales; Chronological Index of Foreign Intercourse of Korea From the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Twentieth Century; and Korea, Fact and Fancy. He is the author of Military System of Sweden; and other works. Allen, Henry Watkins, soldier, educator, lawyer, governor, was born April 29, 1820, in Prince Edward county, Va. In 1842 with his brother he enlisted in the war of Texas against Mexico; and in 1846 was elected to the state legislature of Mississippi. He ran away from school, had a roving disposition, finally settling in West Baton Rouge, La.; and in 1853 was elected to the Louisiana house of representatives. In 1861 he joined the confederate army; was elected lieutenant-colonel; and became military governor of Jackson, Miss. He was desperately wounded
