At the age of seventeen he enlisted in Captain Nathan Boone's company, a son of the celebrated Daniel Boone. He was afterward elected lieutenant of the company and is now drawing a pension from the 'United States government as a Black Hawk war veteran. He was a son of Pines Allen, a distinguished methodist preacher whose father was William Allen, a large planter in Henry county, Va. James P. Allen, a lawyer and banker of "Windsor, Mo., is a son of John BaiAllen,

descendant of the Aliens of Massachusetts. Shubael Allen moved to Kentucky in 1812, and to Missouri in 1818; and married a daughter of General Trigg. Allen, John Mills, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born July 8, 1847, in Tishomingo county. Miss. He served in the confederate army throughout the civil war. ley Allen. Allen, John Beard, lawyer, congressman, United States senator, was born May 18, 1845, in Crawfordsville, Ind. He was a private soldier in the one hundred and thirtyflfth regiment Indiana volunteers. He was United States attorney for Washington territory in 1875-85; and was reporter of the supreme court of Washington territory in 1878-85. In 1859-61 he was a representative from the territory of Washington to the thirty-sixth congress; and was United States senator in 1889-93. He died Jan. 28, 1903, in Seattle, Wash. Allen, John Henry, mariner, author, was born in 1836 in the West Indies. In 1861 he joined the United States navy as an ensign; and for gallant action in the battle of Mobile he won command of the Selma. He was the author of The Fruits of the Wine Cup, a drama in three acts; and various other works. In 1889 he sailed to Queenstown in his ship Bridgewater; and was drowned on the voyage in January, 1890, at sea. Allen, John J., lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born in Virginia. He was a resident of Harrison county. In 1833-35 he was a representative from Virginia to the twenty-fhird congress. Subsequently he held the office of chief justice of the supreme court of Virginia. Allen, John Marshall, physician, surgeon, was born July 23, 1833, near Liberty, Mo. During the civil war he was chief surgeon of and Mississippi the

East Louisiana army, confederate service. In 1884-85 he served as a representative from Clay county to the Missouri state legislature. He has been president of the Missouri state medical society; vice-president of the American medical association. He has been president of the University medical college of Kansas City, Mo., of which institution he was professor of principles and practice of medicine; and is also lecturer in the medical department of the Missouri university. He is the son of Shubael Allen, born in Orange county, N.Y.; and a

In 1890 he was appointed commissioner to the Louisiana purchase exposition at St. Louis, Mo. Allen, John Robert, educator, author, was born in Iredell county, N. C. Since 1892 he has been professor of mental and moral philosophy in the Southwestern university at Georgetown, Texas. He is the author of Man, Money and the Bible; The Itinerant's Guide. Allen, John W., state senator, congressman, was born in 1802 in Litchfield, Conn. In 1825 he settled in Cleveland, Ohio; was a member of the Ohio state senate in 1835-37; and was mayor of Cleveland. In 1837-41 he was a representative from Ohio to the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth congresses. He was a son of John Allen of Great Barrington,

Mass. Allen, Joseph, merchant, congressman, was born Sept. 2, 1749, in Boston, Mass. He was a merchant in Leicester, and benefactor of

the academy there; was twice elector for president; and was a. clerk of the county court and also a state councillor. In 1810-11 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the eleventh congress to fill a vacancy. He died Sept. 2, 1827, in Worcester, Mass. Allen, Joseph, clergyman, author, was born Aug. 15, 1790, in Medfield, Mass. He was pastor of the congregational church at Northboro in 1816-73; and was a delegate to the peace congress at Paris in 1849. He was the author of Historical Account of Northboro; Centennial Discourse; Memoir of Rev. Dr. Lathrop of Springfield; History of the Worcester Association; and Allen Genealogy. He died Feb. 23, 1873, in Northboro, Mass. Allen, Joseph Addison, educator, lecturer, author, was born April 25, 1819, in Medfield, Mass. He has taught in every grade of school and academy; in 1853-60 was a member of the board of education of Syracuse, N.Y.; for eleven years was superintendent of the Massachusetts reform school; and has lectured extensively on educational and scientific subjects. He is the author of Juvenile Offenders; Methods of Discipline; and other

works. Allen, Joseph Henry, clergyman, lecturer, author, was born Aug. 21, 1829, in Northborough, Mass. In 1857-69 he was editor of the Christian Examiner; in 1891-97 was editor of the Unitarian Review; and in 1878-82 was lecturer on ecclesiastical history in the Harvard university.
