He led a. revolt against the authority of Mexico; and in 1836 he seized Monterey, and held that city with a force of native Californians and adventurers from the United States. Independence was declared, and he was made governor, which position he filled until 1843.

He was one of the Pierce presidential electors in 1852; and was a, member of the Maryland state constitutional convention in 1867. He was chief judge of the fourth judicial circuit and a judge of the Maryland court of appeals in 1867-83; was chief justice of the Maryland court of appeals in 1883-93; and in 1893-1906 was chief justice of the court of appeals for the District of Columbia. In 1896 he was a member of the Venezuela boundary commission. He died Sept. 14, 1906, '

He was a United States officer who served in the Mexican and civil wars; and attained the rank of brigadier-general. He was the author of Tangencies of Circles and Spheres; and Interpretation of Imaginary Roots in Questions of Maxima and Minima. He died Oct. 16, 1884, in Washington, D.C.
