Craig, James, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born May 7, 1820, in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Missouri state legislature in 1847; and was a captain of a volunteer company in the Mexican war. He was circuit attorney for the twelfth judicial circuit in Missouri in 1853-56. In 1857-61 he was a representative from Missouri to the thirty-fifth and thirty-sixth congresses. He was appointed a brigadier-general of volunteers in 1862, and employed in the west. He died Oct. 21, 1888, in St. Joseph, Mo. Craig, James Alexander, educator, linguist, author, was born March 5, 1855, in Canada. Since 1893 he has been professor of Semitic languages and literatures in the university of Michigan. He is the author of Hebrew Word Manual; and other works.

James W., lawyer, jurist, was born 29, 1844, in Coles county. 111. He received a classical education; and in 1867 Ciaig,

graduated from the Michigan state university. In 1872-76 he was state's attorney; and has been prominently identified with the legislature of Illinois since 1903. Since 1903 he has been judge of the fifth judicial circuit court of Illinois. Craig, John, educator, horticulturist, was was born April 27, 1864, in Canada. He was educated at the Montreal high school; attended McGill university; in 1887 graduated from the Iowa state college; and subsequently received the degree of M.S. from Cornell university. In 1890-97 he was horticulturist at the Dominion experimental farms; and in 1899-1900 was professor of horticulture and forestry in the Iowa state college. In 1900-02 he was professor of extension teaching in Cornell university of Ithaca, N.Y.; and since 1903 has been professor of horticulture in that great institution of learning. In 1902 he was secretary of the American association; and in 1893 and 1904 was juror at World's fair. He is a noted writer on horticulture; and in 1904 was editor of the

National Nurseryman. Craig, John, philanthropist, was bom in 1797, in Goflfstown, N.H. Besides giving liberally during his lifetime, he bequeathed sums amounting to one hundred thousand dollars to various universalist educational institutions. He died July 19, 1873, in Rochester, N.Y. Craig, John Enster, lawyer, legislator, was born March 14, 1853, in Claysville, Pa. In 1886-90 he was a member of the Iowa legislature. In 1889 and again in 1891 he was elected mayor of Keokuk, Iowa; and under his administration great improvements were made in that city. His name was suggested

as a candidate for governor at the convention held at Sioux City in 1889, but he declined to permit his name to be used.

Craig, Katherine L., educator, author, was born auout 1880. in 1904-08 she was superintendent of public instruction of Colorado. She is the author of Primary Geography; and also a course of instruction tor Colorado schools. Craig, Lewis, clergyman, was born in 1737, in Orange county, Va. As there was no ordained minister at hand to baptize him, he began preaching before his baptism, and was indicted for preaching the gospel contrary to the law. He died in 1828, in Kentucky. Craig, Lewis S., soldier, was born in Virginia. He served with distinction in the Mexican war, winning the brevet of major for gallant conduct at Monterey, and that lieutenant-colonel of at Contreras and

Churubusco, where he was wounded.

He met

his death at the hands of deserters while in the performance of his duty. He died June 6, 1852, near New River, Cal. Craig, Oscar John, educator, lecturer, college president, was born April 18, 1846, in Madison, Ind. In 1881 he graduated from De Pauw university; in 1887 received the degree of A.M. from that institution; and in 1889, received the degree of Ph.D. from Wooster university. In 1880-83 he was superintendent of the city schools of Sullivan, Ind., in 1883-87 he was principal of the preparatory department, and in 1887-95 was professor of political economy and history in Purdue university. He has ben a successful institute lecturer; and since 1907 he has been president of the university of Montana. Craig, Robert, congressman, was born in

Virginia. In 1829-33 and 1835-41 he was a representative from Virginia to the twentyfirst,

twenty-second, twenty-fourth, twenty-

fifth

and twenty-sixth congresses.

was born March 24, 1843, in New York City. He had talent as a painter; and was tlie author of burlesques on Don Juan, Faust, Hamlet, and Camille. He died Dec. 8, 1872.. in St. Louis, Mo. Craig, Samuel Alfred; soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born Nov. 19, 1839, in Brookville. Pa. He was commissioned captain in the veteran reserve corps. United States army, and served continuously four years and three months. He was elected district attorney. In 1889-91 he was a representative to the fifty-first congress as a republican.
