He devoted both time and means to the establishment and successful continuance of the Laporte library and the national history association, over which he presided for twelve years. Dakin, Thomas Spencer, soldier, merchant, was born in 1831 in Orange county, N. Y. In 1862 he was captain in the thirteenth regiment, Brooklyn and served in the Virginia campaign. After the war he became major-general of militia; and was widely known as a member of the American rifle team. He died May 13, 1878, in Brooklyn,

Since 1885 he has been a minister of the seventh-day baptist church; and has filled pastorates at Leonardsville, N.Y. and at Westerly, R.I. Since 1902 has been president of Milton college. Wis. In 1887 he published The Song of Songs and in 1888 The Song of Solomon, translated from the Hebrew, with notes. Dalcho, Frederick, physician, clergyman, author, was born in 1770 in London, England. He was rector of St. Michael's church in 1819-36. He was the author of The Evidence of the Divinity of Our Savior; Historic Account of the Episcopal Church in South Carolina and Ahiman Rezon. He died in 1836 in Charleston, S.C.

In 1816 he was a member of the convention to divide the Mississippi territory; and served several terms in the Alabama state legislature. He died May 23, 1841, in Lauderdale county, Miss.

In 1890 he was president of the United terminal railroad. He is president of the Glen Dale mining company; president of the West Cable raining and milling company; and treasurer and director of the Montezeuma mining and smelting company. Dale, Thomas, colonial governor, was born in England. He deserves special praise for the important changes that he introduced in the colonial land-laws, under which, as established by him, the cultivator was given a chance of becoming proprietor of the soil, which was an impossibility under the old system.
