Fithian, Edward, naval ofiicer, was born Dec. 13, 1820, in New Jersey. In 1848 he was appointed third assistant engineer of the United States navy; and in 1906 he was retired with the rank of rear-admiral. Fithian, George W., lawyer, congressman, 4, 1854, near Willow Hill, 111. He was states attorney of Jasper county in 1876-84. In 1889-95 he was a representative to the fifty-first, fifty-second and fifty-third congresses as a democrat. He also served as railroad and warehouse commissioner of Illinois. Fitton, James, clergyman, founder, was born in 1803 in Boston, Mass. He was instrumental in establishing the college of the Holy Cross at Worcester; and the first Roman catholic newspaper. He died Sept. 15, 1881, in Boston, Mass.

In 1857-76 he was engaged in the active practice of law in Cohoes, N.Y. and has been prominently identified with the business and public affairs of his state. In 1896-1906 he was justice of the supreme court for the third judicial district; and received the re-election for the term ending in 1919. He is president of the Masonic temple association of Cohoes, N.Y.; the Mechanics savings vice-president of bank of Cohoes, N.Y.; and is also a director of various industrial and financial corpora;
