Previous to taking orders he studied law. After having pursued a course of civil engineering h e entered Trinity college, then studied divinity; and at the age of twenty-five was ordained deacon. On being admitted to the priesthood, he became the first rector of Trinity church of Norwich, Conn., and while there established a church at Yantie. Dr. Flagg has been the founder of several parishes; was rector of the New York All Saints' church; and for six years was assistant of Grace church. For several years he was chaplain of the ninth regiment New York national guard; and also' of the prince of orange lodge, N.Y. He has delivered a course of lectures on literature and history in New York and elsewhere. A collection of his poetical works was published in 1889 and six years later a second volume was issued, entitled Poema and Later Poems. He delivered the poem before the fifty- second convention of the alpha delti phi fraternity. He was made a doctor of law by St. John's college of Annapolis in 1898. He is the author of Rejoice for Liberty, a patriotic hymn. He received the degree of doctor in divinity from the university of the city of New

He is the author of The Hellenic Orations of Demosthenes; Versicles; The Seven Against Thebes, of ^schylus; Iphigenia among the Taurians, of Euripides; Outlines of the Temporal; Model Principles of Attic Prose; and Lives of Cornelius Nepos. Flagg, James Montgomery, artist, author, was born June 18, 1877, in Westchester county, N.Y. Since 1892 he has been drawing for Judge and Life of New York City. He is the author of Yankee Girls Abroad; and Tom Foolery.

He settled in Hartford, where he became prominent as a portrait painter. He was called to the rectorship of Grace church of Brooklyn Heights, where he remained eight years. In his later life,

while still pursuing his art, he devoted a portion of his time to literary work, and in 1892 published his first book. The Life and Letters of Washington AUston. He died Sept. 25, 1899, in New York City. Flagg, John Foster Brewster, physician, author, was born May 12, 1804, in Boston, Mass. He was a Philadelphia physician; and a professor in the Pennsylvania college of dental surgery. He was the author of

Ether and Chloroform and Their Employment in Surgery, Dentistry, Midwifery, etc.
