vessels and munition of war; and in 1895 during the Chinese-Japanese war he purchased the cruiser Esmeralda from Chili and delivered her to Japan. Both before and during the Spanish-American war he rendered valuable services to the United States government in the purchase of vessels and munitions of war. He is a director of several railroads, steamship and industrial companies; and of various financial institutions. Flint, David Boardman, merchant, philanthropist, was born May 1, 1816, in Troy, N.H. He is the founder of the well known firm of Flint and Hall, dealers in lumber. He built the Channing Chapel of Winter Harbor, Maine; and deeded it to the American unitarian association. Frank Putnam, lawyer. United Flint, States senator, was born July 15, 1862, in Reading, Mass. He was educated in the public schools of San Francisco, where he began the study of law. In 1888-92 he was clerk in the United States marshal's office at San Francisco; and was admitted to the practice of law. In 1893-93 he was assistant United States attorney; and in 18971901 was United States attorney of the southern district of California.
