Collins, George C., merchant, philanthro- pist, was born in 1810 in South Hadley. In draft-riots of 1863 he was a member of a committee to prosecute the claims of the families of the murdered negroes against the city; and was one of the largest contribu- tors to the fund raised for the relief of the families. He was an active promoter of vari- ous charitable and religious objects. He died Feb. 10, 1875, in New York City.

Collins, George J., soldier, was born Oct, 25, 1839, in New York City. He attained the rank of lieutenant in the civil war. In 1882 he was elected alderman of the twenty-first ward of Brooklyn; and in 1890 postmaster of Brooklyn, NY.

Collins, George Knapp, soldier, lawyer, au- thor, was born April 15, 1837, in Spafford, N.Y. Since 1866 he has practiced Jaw in Syracuse, N.Y. Ile is greatly interested in microscopal sciences; and was president of the Central New York microscopal society. He is the author of Mem- oirs of the One Hund- red and Forty-Ninth Regiment New York Volunteers listory of the Town of Spafford; Genealogical History of the Collins Family and also a novel.

Collins, George Stuart, educator, author, was born Sept. 25, 1862, in New Rochelle, NY. Since 1905 he has been professor of modern languages and literature at the Brooklyn polytechnic institute. He is the author of Dryden's Dramatic Theory and Praxis.

Collins, Gilbert, lawyer, jurist, was born Aug. 26. 1846, in Stonington, Conn. He re- ceived the rudiments of his education in the An image should appear at this position in the text. public schools; and he was prepared by Dav- id Hart, A.M., for the Yale college. He has attained success as one of the foremost lawyers of the cast, and has a large prac- tice in Jersey City, N.J., of which he was mayor in 1884-86. In 1897-1904 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of New Jersey, and his decisions have shown great judicial ability and learning, Collins, Holdridge Ozro, soldier, lawyer, author, was born Dec. 10, 1844, in Cayuga county, N.Y. He was instrumental in the creation of the first regiment infantry, Illi- nois national guard; and he was one of the six captains who was first elected. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel; and had a large command in Chicago during the rail- road riots in 1877. In 1884 he published A History of the Illinois National Guards.

Collins, Howard Dennis, physician, author, was born July 9, 1868, in New York City. He has been assistant demonstrator of anat- omy at the Columbian university; and now practices his profession in New York City. He is the author of Textbook on Physiology-

Collins, Isaac, publisher, was born Feb. 16, 1746, in Delaware. In 1770 he was appoint- ed public printer in New Jersey, and re- moved to Burlington. In 1771 he began the publication of an almanac, which he issued annually for more than twenty years. In 1778 he removed to Trenton, and there printed five thousand copies of a family Bible that was remarkably free from type- graphical errors. He died March 21, 1817, in Burlington, N.J.

Collins, John, governor, He was the eleventh governor of Delaware in 1821-22. He died April 15, 1822, in Wilmington, Del. Collins, John, congressman, colonial gov- ernor, was born June 8, 1717. He was colo- nial governor of Rhode Island in 1786-90. In 1778-83 he was a delegate from Rhode Is- land to the continental congress; and a sign- er of the articles of confederation. He was clected a representative in congress in 1789. He died March 8, 1795, in Newport, R.I.

Collins, Joseph, physician, neurologist, au- thor, was born Sept. 22, 1866, in Brookfield, Conn. He has been president of the Ameri- can neurological association; and president of the New York Neurological society. He is the author of The Faculty of Speech; Diseases of the Brain; and Pathology of Nervous Diseases.

Collins, Joseph Victor, educator, author, was born Dec, 26, 1858, in Wooster, Ohio. Since 1894 he has been teacher of mathe- matics at the state normal school at Stevens Point, Wis. He is the author of Textbook of Algebra.

Collins, Mrs. Laura G., author, poet, was born May 6, 1826, in Maysville, Ky. She is the author of The Little Marquise; and Im- mortelles and Asphodels, a volume of poems.

Collins, Louis, journalist, jurist, author, was born Dec. 25, 1797, in Kentucky. He was a journalist and jurist of Maysville, Ky. He is the author of Historical Sketches of Kentucky; and Ilistory of Kentucky. He died in 1870 in Maysville, Ky.

Collins, Lorin Warren, soldier, lawyer, state legislator, jurist, was born in 1838 in Lowell, Mass. He served through the civil war in the seventh Minnesota; and was brevetted captain in 1865. He was county attorney of Stearns county for ten years; and a member of the Minnesota house of representatives in 1881-83. In 1883 he was appointed judge of the seventh judicial dis- trict; and was elected the following year.
